To me Gurudeva manifests himself in four forms, viz:
1. Gu + Ru – Who destroys ignorance. Appearance of Absolute Knowledge Bhagavan removes ignorance. Hence, Original Guru is Bhagavan.

2. He who has engaged me in the service of Bhagavan directly, is the second appearance of my Sreela Gurudeva Most Revered Nityalilapravishtha Prabhupad Sreemat Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur, Founder of the worldwide Sree Chaitanya Math and Sree Gaudiya Math Organisation.

3. Vaishnavas are the third appearance of Gurudeva. What do they do? As Gurudeva always engages His disciples in the service of His object of worship, Vaishnavas also do the same.

4. Disciples are the fourth manifestation of Guru. They, as disciples, actually do the work of a Guru, i.e. they engage myself always in the service of Gurudeva. There is no scope of doing any anti-devotional act of violation. If there is any violation, they will detect it. Hence, disciples are also my Guruvarga. Disciples perform Gurupuja by singing the glories of Gurudeva, I perform Gurupuja by hearing. But by hearing the glories, if I have got the evil motive of misappropriating it, it will not be Gurupuja. As chanting is bhakti, hearing is also bhakti. In whatever way devotees may express their hearts, they are all my objects of worship."

Varista Gopis

Lalita = Svarupa Damodara Goswami On the northern petal of Ananga-sukhada Kunja, there is a beautiful kunja covered with various kinds of flowers and trees. This place is known as Lalitanandada Kunja and is the color of lightning. The lovely Lalita Sakhi always lives here. She has a beautiful bright yellow (gorocana) complexion and wears a dress the color of peacock feathers. She is adorned with celestial ornaments and personifies the type of bhava known as khandita. She and Sri Krsna are very, very dear to each other and her seva is to bring camphor and tambula to Him. Her age is 14 years, 8 months and 27 days. In the opinion of the panditas, her father’s name is Visokaka, her mother’s Sarada, and her husband’s Bhairava Gopa. Her home is in Yavata and her nature is vama-prakhara. In gaura-lila, she has assumed the form of Sri Svarupa Damodara Gosvami.

Visakha = Sri Ramananda Raya On the northeast petal of Ananga Sukhada Kunja lies Ananda Kunja, which is cloudlike in color, and is the residence of Sri Visakha. She is very dear to Sri Krsna and has the bhava known as svadhina-bhartrka. Her seva is dressing and decorating. Her dress resembles the stars in the evening sky, and her complexion is cream-colored with a tinge of red (gaurangi). Her age is 14 years, 2 months and 15 days. Her father’s name is Pavana, her mother’s Daksina and her husband’s Bahuka. She is adhika-madhya, and her home is in Yavata. She appears in gaura-lila as Sri Ramananda Raya.

Campakalata (Campakamallika) = Sri Sivananda On the southern petal of Madana-sukhada Kunja lies Kamalata Kunja, the home of Sri Krsna’s beloved Sri Campakalata. This extremely blissful kunja is the color of molten gold. Campakalata, who loves Krsna very much, personifies the stage of a nayika known as vasaka-sajja. Her complexion is the color of a yellow campaka flower and her dress the color of a cataka bird (swallow). Her nature is vama-madhya, and her seva is to offer jewelled necklaces and to fan with a camara. Her age is 14 years, 2 months and 13 1/2 days. Her mother’s name is Vatika, her father’s Arama, and her husband’s Canda. In gaura-lila she appears as Sri Sivananda

Citra = Sri Govindananda Citra-devi can read between the lines of books and letters written in many different languages, perceiving the hidden intentions of the author. She is a skilled gourmet and can understand the testes of various foods made with honey, milk, and other ingredients simply by glancing at them.
She is expert in playing music on pots filled with varying degrees of water. She is learned in the literature describing astronomy and astrology, and she is well versed in the theoretical and practical activities of protecting domestic animals.
She is especially expert at gardenting and she can nicely make various kinds of nectarean beverages.
There are also eight other gopi maidservants, headed by Rasalika-devi, who are expert at making various kinds of nectarean beverages.
There are other gopis who mostly collect transcendental herbs and medicinal creepers from the forest and do not collect flowers or anything else. Citra-devi is the leader of these gopis.
On the eastern petal of Madana Sukhada Kunja lies the multicolored Padma Kinjalka Kunja, where Sri Citra resides. She and Sri Krsna are very affectionate toward each other, and she is very devoted to her seva of bringing cloves and garlands. She possesses the abhisarika-nayika-bhava, has a beautiful saffron complexion, wears a dress that resembles crystal, and has many wonderful qualities. Her age is 14 years, 7 months and 14 days. Her father’s name is Catura, her mother’s Carccika, and her husband’s Pitharaka. She is an adhika-mrdvinayika, and her home is in Yavata. In gaura-lila she appears as Sri Govindananda.

Tungavidya =Sri Vakresvara Pandita Tungavidya is the fifth of the varistha gopis. Her complexion is the color of kunkuma and the fragrance of her body is like sandalwood mixed with camphor. She is fifteen days younger than Srimati Radharani.
Tungavidya is hot-tempered and expert at dissimulation. She wears white garments. Her parents are Puskara and Medha-devi and her husband is Balisa.
Tungavidya is one of the leaders of the gopis. She is learned in the eighteen branches of knowledge.
She has full faith in Krsna. She is very expert at arranging the meeting of the divine couple. She is learned in rasa-sastra (transcendental mellows), niti-sastra (morality), dancing, drama, literature and all other arts and sciences.
On the western petal of Madana-sukhada Kunja lies the extremely beautiful crimson-colored Tungavidyanandada Kunja, where Sri Tungavidya Sakhi always resides. She loves Sri Krsna very much and, filled with eagerness for that prema, she exhibits the bhava known as vipralabdhatva. Her complexion is radiant like saffron mixed with camphor and sandalwood paste, and her dress is pandu-mandana (pale yellow). Her mood is daksina-prakhara. Her mother’s name is Medha, her father’s Puskara, and her husband’s Balisa. She is very devoted to her seva of dancing and singing, etc. Her home is in Yavata, and her age is 14 years, 2 months and 22 days. In gaura-lila she appears as Sri Vakresvara Pandita.

Indulekha = Vasu Ramananda Indulekha is the sixth of the varistha gopis. She has a tan complexion and wears garments the color of a pomegranate flower. She is three days younger than Srimati Radharani.
Her parents are Sagara and Vela-devi and her husband is Durbala. She is contrary and hot-tempered by nature.
Noble Indulekha is learned in the science and mantras of the Naga-sastra, which describes various methods of charming snakes. She is also learned in the Samudraka-sastra, which describes the science of palmistry.
She is expert at stringing various kinds of wonderful necklaces, decorating the teeth with red substances, gemology and weaving various kinds of cloth.
In her hand she carries the auspicious messages of the divine couple. In this way she creates the good fortune of Radha and Krsna by creating Their mutual love and attraction.
The group of gopis headed by Tungabhadra-devi are the friends and neighours of Indulekha. Among these gopis is a group, headed by Palindhika-devi, which acts as messengers for the divine couple.
Indulekha-devi is fully aware of the confidential secrets of the divine couple. Some of her friends are engaged in providing ornaments for the divine couple, others provide exquisite garments and others guard the divine couple's treasury.
Indulekha-devi is thus the leader of all the gopis engaged in these services in the various parts of Vrndavana.
On the southeastern petal of Madana-sukhada Kunja lies the golden-colored Purnendu Kunja, where Sri Indulekha lives. She has a lemon-yellow complexion and wears a dress that is radiant like a pomegranate flower. She has a deep love for Sri Krsna and possesses the prosita-bhartrka-bhava. She often serves Krsna by bringing Him nectar-like delicious meals. Her age is 14 years, 2 months and 10 1/2 days. She is vama-prakhara and her principal seva is fanning with a camara. Her home is in Yavata, her father’s name is Sagara, her mother’s Vela and her husband’s Durbala. In gaura-lila she appears as Vasu Ramananda.

Rangadevi = Sri Govindananda Gosh Rangadevi is the seventh of the varistha gopis. Her complexion is the color of a lotus filament and her garments are the color of a red rose. She is seven days younger than Srimati Radharani.
Her personal qualities are much like those of Campakalata. Her parents are Karuna-devi and Rangasara.
Ranga-devi is always like a great ocean of coquettish words and gestures. She is very fond of joking with her friend Srimati Radharani in the presence of Lord Krishna.
Among the six activities of diplomacy she is especially expert in the fourth: patiently waiting for the enemy to make the next move. She is an expert logician and because of previous austerities she has attained a mantra by which she can attract Lord Krsna.
Kalakanti-devi is the leader of the eight most important friends of Ranga-devi. These friends are all expert in the use of perfumes and cosmetics.
Ranga-devi's friends are expert at burning aromatic incense, carrying coal during the winter and fanning the divine couple in the summer.
Ranga-devi's friends are able to control the lions, deer and other wild animals in the forest. Ranga-devi is the leader of all these gopis.
On the southwest petal of Madana-sukhada Kunja lies the dark blue, cloudlike Sukhada Kunja, where Sri Krsna’s beloved Sri Rangadevi always resides. Her complexion is the color of a lotus stamen, and her dress is red like a jaba flower. She possesses the utkanthita-bhava, and in every way she is very attached to Sri Krsna. Her seva is offering candana, and her nature is vama-madhya. Her home is in Yavata, and her age is 14 years, 2 months and 4 1/2 days. Her mother’s name is Karuna, her father’s Rangasagara and her husband’s Vakreksana. In Kali-yuga she appears in gaura-lila as Govindananda Ghosa.
The chief gopis in Sri Rangadevi’s yutha are Kalakanthi, Sasikala, Kamala, Prema Manjari, Madhavi, Madhura, Kamalata and Kandarpa-sundari

Sudevi = Vasudeva Gosha Sudevi is the eighth of the varistha gopis. She is sweet and charming by nature. She is the sister of Rangadevi. Her husband is Vakreksana, the younger brother of Bhairava. Her marriage with Vakreksana was arranged by his younger brother. Her form and other qualities are so similar to those of her sister Rangadevi that they are often mistaken for one another.
Sudevi always remains at the side of her dear friend Srimati Radharani. Sudevi arranges Radharani's hair, decorates Her eyes with mascara and massages Her body.
She is expert in training male and female parrots and she is also expert in the pastimes of roosters. She is an expert sailor and she is fully aware of the auspicious and inauspicious omens described in the Sakuna-sastra.
She is expert at massaging the body with scented oils, she knows how to start fires and keep them burning and she knows which flowers blossom with the rising of the moon.
Kaveri-devi and the other friends of Sudevi are expert at constructing leaf-spitoons, playing music on bells and decorating couches in various ways.
Sudevi's friends are also entrusted with the decoration of the divine couple's sitting place. Sudevi's friends act as clever spies, disguising themselves in various ways and moving among Radharani's rivals (Candravali and her friends) to discover their secrets. Sudevi's friends are the deities of Vrndavana forest and they are charged with the protection of the forest birds and bees. Sudevi is the leader of these gopis.
On the northwest petal of Madanananda Kunja lies the beautiful emerald-colored Vasanta-sukhada Kunja, the residence of Sri Sudevi. She is very loving toward Sri Hari, has a complexion the color of a lotus stamen, and wears a dress the color of a red jaba flower. She possesses the bhava known as kalahantarita and her seva is to bring water. She is vama-prakhara. Her age is 14 years, 2 months and 4 days. Her home is in Yavata, her mother is Karuna, her father Rangasagara, and she is married to the younger brother of Vakreksana (Rangadevi’s husband). In gaura-lila she appeared as Sri Vasudeva Ghosa.

Asta - Manjaris

Rupa manjari = Rupa Goswami In the northern part of Sri Lalita Sakhi’s kunja lies Rupollasa Kunja, where the very beautiful and graceful Sri Rupa Manjari resides. She is the foremost among the gopis known as priya-narma-sakhis. Her complexion is the color of gorocana (a bright yellow pigment secreted from a cow’s kidney), and she delights in wearing a dress the color of peacock feathers. Her age is 13 years 6 months. The panditas call her Rangana-malika. In age, she is one day younger than Lavanga Manjari. In gaura-lila she appears as Srila Rupa Gosvami.

Rati manjari = Raghunatha das Goswami In the southern part of Sri Indulekha’s kuñja lies Ratyambuja Kuñja, where the beautiful Sri Rati Manjari always resides. Her dress is covered with stars, her complexion is like lightning, and she is daksina-mrdvi in nature. The panditas also call her Tulasi. Her age is 13 years 2 months. In Kali-yuga, in gaura-lila, she is known as Raghunatha dasa Gosvami.

Lavanga manjari = Sanatan Goswami In the eastern part of Sri Tungavidya’s kunja lies Lavanga-sukhada Kunja, which is very enchanting to all the beautiful-eyed gopis. In that kunja, Sri Lavanga Manjari always blissfully resides. In age, she is one day older than Sri Rupa Manjari, and she is very famous for her pleasant nature. Her complexion is like lightning, and she wears a dress marked with stars. She gives much happiness to Sri Krsna, and her nature is always daksina-mrdvi. Her age is 13 years 6 months and 1 day. In Kali-yuga, in gaura-lila, she is known as Sri Sanatana Gosvami.

Rasa manjari = Raghunatha Bhatta Goswami In the western part of Sri Citra's kunja lies Rasananda Kunja, where the beautiful Rasa Manjari always resides. She is famous as being in all respects the life of Sri Rupa Manjari. Her dress is like the feathers of a swan, and her complexion is like a fully blossomed campaka flower. She is rich in qualities much like those of Sri Lavanga Manjari. Because she has taken shelter of Sri Rupa Manjari, she has become very dear to her. She serves as a messenger between Radha and Krsna, and she is very clever in arranging Their meeting. Her age is 13 years, and in gaura-lila, she is known as Raghunatha Bhatta Gosvami.

Guna manjari = Gopala Bhatta Goswami
In the northeastern part of Sri Campakalata’s kunja lies the beautiful Gunanandaprada Kunja, where Sri Guna Manjari always resides. Her complexion is bright like lightning, and she wears a fine silk dress the color of a red jaba flower. She is famous for her strong desire to make Rupa Manjari happy. She is three days younger than Sri Tulasi (Rati Manjari) and is the delight of Sri Krsna. She is described as being daksina-prakhara in nature. Her age is 13 years, 1 month and 27 days. In gaura-lila she is known as Sri Gopala Bhatta Gosvami.

Manjulali manjari = Lokanatha Goswami In the northern part of Sri Sudevi’s kunja lies the beautiful Lilanandaprada Kunja, where the charming Sri Manjulali Manjari always resides. She is full of pleasant qualities and is very dear to Sri Rupa Manjari. Her dress is red like a jaba flower, and her complexion is like molten gold. She is also known as Sri Lila Manjari. Her nature is vama-madhya, and her age is 13 years, 6 months and 7 days. In gaura-lila she is known as Sri Lokanatha Gosvami.

Vilasa manjari = Srila Jiva Goswami In the southeast part of Sri Visakha’s kunja lies the very beautiful Vilasanandada Kunja, where Sri Vilasa Manjari always remains as one of Sri Rupa Manjari’s sakhis. She has a bodily color like that of a golden ketaki flower, and her dress is the color of a bumblebee. Her nature is vama-mrdvi, and she is 4 days younger than Sri Rasa Manjari, making her age 12 years, 11 months and 26 days. In gaura-lila she is known as Sri Jiva Gosvami.

Kausturi manjari = Srila Krsna das Kaviraj In the southwest corner of Sri Rangadevi’s kunja lies one more kunja, which is known as Kausturyanandada Kunja, the residence of Sri Kausturi Manjari. She wears a dress that resembles crystal, and her complexion is like pure gold. Her age is 13 years, and her nature is vama-mrdvi. In Kali-yuga, in gauranga-lila, she is known as Sri Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami.

Srila Santa Maharaja was an outsanding preacher through his life. He was very dear to his godbrothers and to his Spiritual Master. Srila Santa Maharaja left the world in Calculta where he had spending the last years in his bed, deeply absorbed in the welfare of all living entities. Despite of his state of being abscend minded from the mundane fares, he still received thousands of visitors and even initiated many new sannyasis into the preaching invitation his gurudeva made to the whole world.

Strict sannyas general, he capted eiaght eract in giving amazing example. It was also fantastic to see that His disciple, Bhakti Vichar Bharati Maharaja in Mayapur, was able to open Srila Bhakti Kumud Santa Maharaja’s glorious Mandir on the Bhaktisddhanta road, just a few months before the final samadhi of Srila Santa Maharaja.

Srila Bhakti Kumud Santa Maharaja has established many beautiful mandirs in India and also traveled around the world preaching the glories of Lord Caitanya in England, Germany and USA. I personally met him many times, because he used to always come to visit Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhara Maharaja and to Srila Bhakti Pramode Puri Maharaja’s functions; always describing himself as his juniors. He joined Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur Prabhupada’s Mission when he was still a young boy and, as he told me personally, Srila Bhakti Pramode Puri Maharaja had been a tutor for him in his early stages of math’s life.

Srila Santa Maharaj was an enthusiastic and fired preacher, who spare no effort to defend the Bhakti – Siddhanta. Anyhow, but on the very personal level he was extremely kind and affectionate and always able in many occasions to rejoice and witness his caring nature. He and His disciples were also caring members of the World Vaishnava Association, even for some many years they were intensely preocupied with his state of health.

Santa Maharaja’s glories will be heard all over. Recently I visited Surya Kund in Braj, where one of his sannyas disciple called Madhusudhan Maharaj is taking care of the restored Surya Narayan Mandir, and I saw a big and beautifull picture of Him being worshiped there, that was my greatest joy.

His sannyasis and disciples will continue His legacy which increase power and love getting his backing now directly from the Spiritual World. Even though it is sad that we miss His physicall association now, it is also glorious and ecstatic how this last great acarya of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur, held up the banner of preaching even while lying in the bed.

I want to share with all of you a special thing what happened:

Another sannyasi, also called Santa Maharaja, left the world on the same day in Lima – Peru; he had received his sannyas name Bhakti Vedanta Santo Maharaja in respected memory of Srila Bhakti Kumud Santa Maharaja for being excelent preacher for more than 20 years.
By mystical arrangement of Srimati Radharani, this two Santa Maharaja left this world practically at the same hour.

1) He who brought the treasure of divine love and who was filled with compassion and mercy--where has such a personality as Advaita Acarya gone?

3) Where are my Raghunatha Bhatta and Gopala Bhatta, and where is Krsnadasa Kaviraja? Where did Lord Gauranga, the great dancer, suddenly go?

4) I will smash my head against the rock and enter into the fire. Where will I find Lord Gauranga, the reservoir of all wonderful qualities?

5) Being unable to obtain the association of Lord Gauranga accompanied by all of these devotees in whose association He performed His pastimes, Narottama Dasa simply weeps.

Die to live means sacrifice or seva (service). Seva means death. Seva means to give one’s own self for a particular cause, for Krishna. That this mad, mundane concocted self should be saved is not a very laudable thing. It is a mortal thing, and the depot of many reactions. So one should get rid of this centre as soon as possible, and enter into the land of confidence, goodness, fairness and sweetness. Try to enter that land with a sincere attitude. Your campaign must be partial. Taking one step forward and three steps back won’t do. There should be no such hesitation. You are finite and you want to get the advantage of the infinite? You are so small, and do you think that by sacrificing only a part of your smallness your aspiration for the whole can be fulfilled? Is it reasonable to expect such? No, it is not so easy.

Our own tendency for exploitation and renunciation creates so many units of this plane, like so much dust to blind our eyes so we cannot see Him. Kanaka pasyanti kamini mayayo jagat. Those who are lustful try to find out where is a beautiful lady. Pasyanti dhana mayo jagat. The greedy people always busy their minds with the thought. “Oh, there is Birla, there is Tata, there is Ford,” who are the moneyed men in this world. They only think about moneyed men because they love wealth the most.

Dhara mayo jagat and khira prayanti narayano jagat.

Those who are liberated from the outer external influences may find, “Oh, I am in the kingdom of Narayan, who is the support and guardian of the whole world. We see His hand everywhere. Without His direction nothing can move.” They may boast that, “I have got such power, I have got such beauty, I have got wealth,” but it is all a false show. The real backing spirit is Narayan, the all pervading, all knowing, all good principle. And the temporary external plane is the killing aspect of existence. It is only our prejudices of so many types that have captured us.

So by whatever process we approach the Lord the tenor of our movement should be, if we want a guarantee that it will actually be for the satisfaction of Krishna, that my whole effort depends upon the genuine character of the agent through whom I am rendering my services. If the agent is a false man then my whole energy is wasted. But if he is a real agent then I must be the gainer through him. If I connect with Vaikuntha through him then my actions will be valued.

Otherwise we may be the loser, aparadha (offender). Nama aparadha, seva aparadha, archana apradha – there are so many aparadhas. It is also written in the scriptures that if service is not done properly, then we are sure to commit some offences against the Deity. Either we will get satisfaction or trouble. Aradhana is the proper thing, and the hateful handling of the holy things is aparadha. It all depends on the satisfaction of whom it is we are serving. So we must be careful.

We must not be overconfident of our previous acquisition – so much I have acquired, my progress is so much. I must not be satisfied with my self-certificate, self-satisfaction, the certificate of my own making. Mahaprabhu Himself said, “I am taking the name, I am showing so many tears in the name of Krishna. But why? It is all a false show na prema gandho ‘sti. My crying is only a show to canvas others to see what a great devotee I am.” So much you are to disbelieve your own self that you are a devotee. In this way we must be very careful, very, very careful!

Kotis vapi maha mune. Krsnadas Kaviraj Goswami and Narottam Das Thakura were seeing, “The whole world is absolved from sin, but I am neglected, I am left as the only exception. I am so low and ill fated that I am rejected from that most benevolent infinite lila. I alone am rejected. I could not utilize this great fortunate wave.” This should be the real tendency of a genuine vaisnava who has actually come in relation with the infinite. Whenever the finite comes in touch with the infinite his temperament cannot be otherwise. “I am empty, I don’t get anything”, that should be the temperament.

I feel emptiness within me. I can’t get the goal. My life is frustrated. Neither do I get a drop of grace from the Lord, and the World, of course, I have left. So both sides gone. I have no alternative. O Lord. If you don’t accept me then I am undone. Please, just make me the servant of the servant of the servant. Give the remotest connection to me. Graciously give the most distant connection of Yourself to me. Don’t leave me, My Lord. I cannot tolerate the craving for You. This heart-felt, heart rendering prayer must come to the vaisnava devotee of the Lord. Onlookers will find that he has got a peep of the fortune. The charm for the world outside is fully eliminated for that person, from the core of his heart, and in the near future his heart will be filled with the nectar of the grace of Krsna.

Bhukti, mukti spriha yavat pisaci na nivartate. The desire for enjoyment, and also for renunciation or mukti, no engagement, are compared to two ghosts (pisaci). So how do you dare to express that bhakti, real love for Krishna, will descend in your heart? Those two demons are there, and do you think the noble lady of devotion will come and sit on the same bench with those demons? How can you expect that? Have you freed yourself from all those nasty things that you dare to invite the lady of Krsna bhakti to come?

Krishna bhajan is independent of any external form of life. Mahaprabhu says, na ‘ham vipro na ca narapati na vaisya na sudro …. Gopi bhartu pada kamalayor dasa dasanu dasa. Varnashrama dharma is just the beginning, then gradually improving we are to go up to the absolute service of Krishna. Without consideration of any law or form, thinking only of service, whatever we do or think or speak, everything should be done for the service of Krsna. That is the standard of real devotion. And mere form may be a little favourable, but not always. The spirit, even crossing every formality, is what is required of us. Our absolute attraction for the service, the beauty does not allow law to have any status. In the beginning they have got some sort of utility.
But when a little advanced they do not care for anything. Only sadhu sanga, adherence to the saint of similar type and a little better. Those who are on the path of raga bhajana, divine love and attraction, find that the only way, the only thing which can guide us is spontaneous desire, laulyam atram mulyam ekalam. The only price is earnest desire and nothing else. Krsna bhakti rasabavita mati, murti kriyatam yadi kuto ‘pi labhyate. Ramananda Raya says to Mahaprabhu, “Anywhere you find it, try to purchase it at any price.” The pure inclination towards the service of Krishna, the innermost tendency to want Krishna, to get Him, the earnest desire to have Him – a drop of that desire for the divine attraction, anywhere you find it, one must try to purchase it at any price. You may acquire it anywhere. It may be from a brahmana or from anyone. It does not matter about the form.

Kiba ivpra kiba nyasi sudra keno haya, yei krsna tattva vetti sei guru haya. Wherever there is a drop of that divine love, try to get it. And what is the price? Earnest desire for it. No other price but earnest desire, laulyam. It is not to be purchased by any money, or anything else which is acquired by so many formal practices in crores of births. Substance is necessary and not form. Form may be adopted only as much as it may connect me with that higher thing. So, sarva dharman parityajya all phases of duty you perceive as perfect, give up. At once try to jump in Me, into the ocean of nectar. I am the ocean of nectar.” Try to jump. That is the direct teaching. So our addiction to this or that, to vanaprastha, sannyas, or grhastha has got very negligent value. But the earnest desire, that is to be acquired by any means. That is bhakti proper.
Others try to know about Krishna from the scriptures (sastra). Ramakrishna once remarked that in the almanac it is written that this year so much rain is expected. But it does not mean that if we please the almanac a drop of water will ooze out of it. So the sastra is something like that. The sastras say do this and do that. But that does not mean the sastra will give us the result, too. They give direction, and as much as we practice we get.

In Srimad-Bhagavatam Narada Muni gives the following advice as a general recommendation as to how to get free from unwanted desires, kama:

asankalpaj jayet kamam, krodham kama-vivarjanat
arthanartheksaya lobham, bhayam tattvavamarsanat
(Srimad Bhagavatam, 7.15.22)

We are not to allow ourselves to contact or enter any plan of life. We are to be always open to deal with the present, not with any plan for the future. If we do not have any kama, any plan, then anger may not come. When there is some obstruction in fulfilling a plan we become angry in life, but if there is no plan of life then we are always open to serve the present and in that way we are clear – free from debt and obligation. Whatever comes in the present we do as our duty. But when there is a plan we become angry if any disturbance will come in carrying that out.

Arthanartheksaya lobham – and lobha, greed, can be conquered just by seeing the reactions of money. If we collect energy from outside, that money comes with the sin and mentality of the man from whom we collected it. It is contaminated with their particular mentality. If we have this conception we may not have greed for any energy that comes under our command.

Bhayam tattvavamarsanat – we apprehend so many good and bad things – we fear. In order to conquer fear we are to cultivate understanding of the real nature of this plane: it all runs by the Lord’s will but we are throwing in our separate interest which comes back to us as reaction. We are to accept that our individual opinion may not be successful here. Everything that comes in clash with the Absolute Will shall have to vanish.
With this idea we will be open in the present and free from any future plans.
All these advices are expressed, but in the end it is given:

etat sarvvam gurau bhaktya
puruso hy anyasa jayet
(Srimad Bhagavatam 7.15.25)

“There is only one thing by which we can conquer all these abnormalities. What is that? Guru-bhakti. ‘I am a servant of my Guru. Whatever he shall say, I shall do.’ Concentrate on this point.”

We are to withdraw all plans and put everything just in this one point: “Whatever will come through the Guru, the representation of the Lord, I shall do that.” There is no necessity of any other thinking, planning, designing, etc.: “I want this, I shall do that,” is all unnecessary. We are only to concentrate on one point. The representation of the Supreme is there – the Guru – and what is wanted by him, we shall do that. Everything is focussed to that one point without seeing anything else.

Exclusive focus is illustrated in the example of Dronacharya testing his students by asking them to aim their arrows at the eye of a toy bird placed in a tree. Each aimed in turn, and Dronacharya asked,

“What do you see?”
The first replied, “The bird, the tree, etc.”
Dissatisfied, Dronacharya said, “Stand aside.”
But when it came to the turn of Arjuna, he replied, “I can see the bird.”
“Can you see the whole of the bird?”
“No. Only the head.”
“The Whole of the head?”
“No. Only the eye of the bird.”
“You cannot se anything else?”
“No. I can see only the eye of the bird.”
Only then was Dronacharya satisfied.

In this way all should be concentrated to one point, “I have connection with the representation of the Supreme, the Guru, and I am at his disposal. Whatever he shall say, I shall do. I am not a servant of anyone else.”

In that way there will be no anger, no lust – nothing. If one can do such exclusive Guru-bhakti it will strongly keep him in a safe position, and that is the key to very easy and quick success.

yasya deve para bhaktir, yatha deve tatha gurau
tasyaite kathita hy arthah, praksante mahatmanah
(Svetasvatara Upanisad 6.23)

A person who serves Guru and Krsna can understand the real meaning of the Scriptures, otherwise the real meaning will not be revealed and one will not be able to follow their real purpose. That is the apriori method of studying the Vedas.

Acharyyavan puruso veda – the meaning of the Upanisads can be understood only by those who have their Guru. Not everyone can understand the real meaning of the Upanisads, but only those who are at the disposal of a real Guru can have access there. By intellectualism we cannot understand their real meaning. Only by approaching the Guru with a serving attitude will the meaning be revealed. He will come and express Himself to us, and we are to have the mood, “I am unqualified and low, but He will come and give admission irrespective of any intellect, study or anything else on my part.”

Research scholarship in the illusory world is all quite a different approach. Scientific research is going from one misconception to another misconception. It is all misconception. It is error and has falsehood at the root. Acintya-bhedabheda. The centre is such that everything is at His command: “Let there be light”, and there was light. “Let there be water,” and there was water.

The research scholars try to research the nature and cause of everything, but ultimately it is all His sweet will. Neglecting that, they simply research, research, research, but if His will is withdrawn, everything will be falsified.

We do not want to apparently deep knowledge of the researchers. We have no concern with what is actually this partial, infinitesimal, surface knowledge which is so attractive to those floating, giving and taking, in that section. It is all false and black-marketeering. Everyone’s money is black and they are transacting with that. In this society false notes are being circulated as real currency.

Acintya-bhedabheda. Everything is His will, and it is the greatest adventure to search for Krsna, to search for the root of the whole infinite. It needs sufficient courage and preparedness to face the risk. To go to discover the North Pole or the highest peak of the Himalayas needs so much courage and involves risk, then what to speak of the courage necessary to find out the Absolute Cause of the Whole. Internal courage – spiritual courage – is necessary. We are to have soul’s courage and have the confidence of deep faith. We are to understand the noble character of the faith within us.

Without electricity we cannot have connection with the moon and other planets. Our hands and eyes cannot contact there. Faith can connect us with the farthest things. All other methods fail. Faith is substantial, it is not part of an illusion of the mind. The whole mind is a concocted thing: it is a source of forgery. Faith is not to be found there. Faith is a function of the soul.

We cannot even see what is within our own body without the help of some apparatus. Through faith, sraddha, the soul can approach and see the higher world.
By faith we can approach the highest, noblest thing, not by our hand or by the help of any mundane elements.

Same Mission, Same Sri Guru

CONCLUDING WORDS

On February 18, Srila Maharaja concluded his final Caitanya-caritamrta class in Vraja-vallabha's home in Uki, N.S.W. with the following affectionate words:

Tomorrow we will leave here for Brisbane.

Then, after two or three days, we will go to Bali, and then Singapore. After that our group will return to India. The devotees who live here have served all the visiting devotees so well. There was no problem at all. You have all helped in my preaching, and so I am very indebted to you. I am especially obliged to the devotees who have come from such a great distance, like America and Canada, to help me.

I have come here to serve my Gurudeva, Srila Bhaktiprajnana Kesava Gosvami Maharaja, as well as my siksa-guru Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja. I am happy that to some extent I am successful in my mission. So many sincere devotees, who were feeling themselves so far from Krsna consciousness, have come in my association; and I have tried to help them all.

For some reason however, some people are opposed to my preaching activities. In that regard there is nothing I can do; I am helpless. I can only beg forgiveness from them. I had no intention to do anything wrong to them. I came only to preach this real philosophy of life, which Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu wanted to give, and which Swamiji wanted to give.

But even in these auspicious activities of preaching, some may be upset. They are thinking that they are serving their Guru Maharaja, Srila Swami Maharaja by such opposition; but actually they are ignorant, not understanding that my mission is the same as that of Srila Swami Maharaja. I want to give them an opportunity to understand properly. And I pray that Sri Nityananda Prabhu will help them. I had no intention to disturb anyone, but as they are feeling some pinching in their heart, some suffering by my coming here, then I beg their pardon. I pray that by approaching them, they will be very kind to me and forgive me. I want to gather all devotees, wherever they may be in the world, and without consideration of caste and creed, I want to help them all. This is actually the duty of all devotees.

So I am very much obliged to you all, that you are enduring so many discomforts here. Although you are all rich and have so many material facilities in your own homes, you gave up all these things, and you are meeting with me in these forest and hills. And these three weeks have passed as a moment's dream, so I am indebted to you all.

Sri Krishna As Guru

Now we shall continue our discourses from Sri Caitanya-caritamrta. Yesterday I recited one sloka from the mangalacaranam of Krsna-karnamrta by Srila Bilvamangala Thakura:

cintamanir jayati somagirir gurur me
siksa-gurus ca bhagavan
sikhi-pincha-maulih
yat-pada-kalpataru-pallava-sekharesu
lila-svayamvara-rasam labhate jayasrih

All glories to Cintamani and my initiating spiritual master, Somagiri.

All glories to my instructing spiritual master, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who wears peacock feathers in His crown. Under the shade of His lotus feet, which are like desire trees, Jayasri [Radharani] enjoys the transcendental mellow of an eternal consort. [C-c, Adi-lila: 1.57]

Here he first offers his pranamas to Cintamani who directed him towards Krsna.

He then offers pranama to his diksa-guru, Somagiri.

Cintamani also means that the guru is cintamani (touchstone), because he gives us Krsna. And Krsna is actually also his siksa-guru. How beautiful this siksa-guru is, with peacock feathers in His crown, with three-folds on His neck and on His abdomen, and with a three-fold bending form. He sings so sweetly. His lotus feet are kalpa-vrksa, wish-fulfilling trees.

His feet are like soft leaves (pallava) and His toenails shine very beautifully.

The tips of His toes are more beautiful than the rays of the moon (candrakirana).

The rays of His toenails are very fragrant. Lila-svayamvara-rasam labhate jayasrih. Jayasri means Srimati Radhika.

She gives Her heart, life and soul to Krsna. Offering Her life thousands of times over, She offers arati to the rays coming from His toenails, and by this She feels the same bliss as if it were Her svayamvara.

What is the meaning of svayamvara?

Devotee: A marriage ceremony where you choose your husband.

Srila Maharaja: Not quite. I will tell you about the svayamvara of Krsna. Once Draupadi met all the queens of Krsna-Satyabhama, Rukmini, Laksmana, etc.

at Kuruksetra. Draupadi asked the queens how they were so fortunate as to have gotten a husband like Krsna. Laksmana then told the story of how she became Krsna's wife. She was the darling daughter of a powerful king, who seeing her as an extremely beautiful and qualified girl, wanted to be sure to give her an equally qualified husband.

He placed a very high pillar in the earth and on the top of that he placed a spinning cakra. Above the cakra was an artificial fish. The king promised the hand of Laksmana to the one who, while looking down at a reflection of the fish in some water, could shoot the pupil in the eye of the fish with an arrow.

The world's champion archers were invited to attend: Krsna, Baladeva, Karna, Duryodhana, Jarasandha, Sisupala, Bhima, Nakula, Sahadeva, Arjuna, and others.

Each was confident that he would marry the beautiful Laksmana. Bhisma also came; he was thinking that "if I will shoot that fish in its pupil, then this girl will be married to Duryodhana." However, everyone of these archers failed in his attempt.

Arjuna came forth very boldly, but his arrow only touched the tail of the fish.

Then Krsna stepped forward, and moved so swiftly that no one could see when He picked up His bow. He then shot the arrow and He pierced the pupil of the fish's right eye. Laksmana told Draupadi, "I became overjoyed, and my friends (sakhis) gave me a garland to place on my husband." To select a bridegroom from lakhs and lakhs 1 of suitors is called a svayamvara, a tradition in ancient India.

At Laksmana's svayamvara there were lakhs and lakhs of men who were the sons of kings (raja kumaras), and although they were very handsome and qualified, she had given her heart to Krsna, having heard His glories. When Krsna shot the eye of the fish, her face glowed with happiness, her hair stood on end, she trembled and began to fall as she gave a sidelong glance towards Krsna. And Krsna, Who is always searching for beautiful girls, glanced toward Laksmana. Receiving this glance, she became so overwhelmed that she could not raise her arms to place the garland on His neck. Her sakhis had to help her. She became so overjoyed that she lost external consciousness. This was the happiness of svayamvara.

Similarly, Srila Bilvamangala Thakura explained that Srimati Radhika becomes overjoyed to serve the rays coming from Krsna's lotus toenails. On the other hand, Srila Prabodhananda Sarasvati, Srila Rupa Gosvami and the Vaisnavas in our disciplic line are not pleased to hear about Srimati Radhika serving Krsna.

Rather, they prefer that Krsna obtains His happiness by serving the lotus feet of Srimati Radhika. They want to see Krsna praying for this opportunity.

Who is Krsna? Srila Prabhodananda Sarasvati writes: vamsi karannipatitam skhalitam sikhandam, bhrastam ca pitavasanam vrajarajasuno, yasya kataksasaraghata vimurchitasya, tam radhikapascirami kada rasena 2. Once, as Krsna was going to graze the cows, He saw Srimati Radhika in a beautiful grove peering at Him from the corner of Her eyes. Srimati's eyes were crooked, like a bow shooting arrows of prema. From this, Krsna lost control of Himself. His flute fell from His hands and His peacock feather fell from His head. He lost external consciousness and His body trembled. Seeing this, Madhumangala nudged Him and asked, "O friend, what are You doing? Nanda Baba, Yasoda maiya, and many elders are here. You can't behave like this in front of them." So Krsna immediately came to His senses. So Srila Prabodhananda Saarasvati is praying, "I want to serve this Srimati Radhika. Her veil, fragrant from contact with Her body, carries this fragrance to Krsna's nostrils, and upon taking it in, He loses all control."

The love and affection of Radhika is higher than that of Krsna. Although Srila Bilvamangala Thakura writes that Krsna is superior, those in the line of Srila Rupa Gosvami, Srila Raghunatha dasa Gosvami, and Srila Prabodhananda Sarasvati desire that Srimati Radhika be always victorious over Krsna.

So Srila Bilvamangala Thakura is praying to Krsna, his siksa-guru. What kind of siksa-guru? Caitya-guru. In His pastimes, Krsna Himself comes as the siksa-guru.

For example, He became guru for Arjuna and the gopis. He is so merciful that prayers to Him will not go in vain. The first duty of the devotees is to have faith in Him. Srila Bilvamangala Thakura and Srila Rupa Gosvami are examples of those who possess such faith.

Srila Rupa Gosvami and Srila Sanatana Gosvami often discussed the glories of Sri Sri Radha and Krsna. On one such occasion, Srimati Radhika noticed that it was already midday and that they had not yet eaten. She came to them as a teenage girl (kisori) and said, "You have not prepared any foodstuffs today. Are you fasting? My mother has given me some milk, rice and sugar. You should make ksira for yourselves." But neither Srila Rupa nor Srila Sanatana had the time to make ksira, and so Srimati Radhika offered to make it for them. She brought some dry cow dung, and by Her mere desire a fire was manifested. In a moment She made very beautiful, tasteful ksira, presented it to Srila Rupa Gosvami and said, "Please offer this ksira to your worshipable Deity (ista-deva), then give some to your brother, and then take some yourself."

Now, Srila Sanatana Gosvami began to wonder Who the girl was. He questioned Rupa, "O Rupa, have you prayed to Radhika, requesting Her to come?" "No, I have not." "But She came and cooked for us. Taste this krsna-prasadam. It could only have been cooked by Her."

As they each took some ksira, they wept uncontrollably and cried out to Srimati Radhika, "Now You have disappeared, and our opportunity has gone. We did not offer obeisances or serve You. Instead, we have troubled You by having You cook for us." Then Srila Sanatana Gosvami told his brother, "Rupa, don't do anything like this in the future."

How marvelous their devotion is. Try to follow in their footsteps. Remembering pastimes such as this, we should try to serve the Divine Couple, Sri Sri Radha and Krsna.

Srila Krsnadasa Kaviraja has explained that diksa-guru is the rupa of Krsna and siksa-guru is the svarupa of Krsna.

Although both are equal, sometimes siksa-guru may be superior, and sometimes diksa-guru may be, but all are liberated-uttama-adhikari.

Now he will explain Krsna's manifestation as bhakta:

isvara-svarupa bhakta tanra adhisthana bhaktera hrdaye krsnera satata visrama

A pure devotee, constantly engaged in the loving service of the Lord, is identical with the Lord, who is always seated in his heart. [C-c, Adi-lila: 1.61]

Diksa-guru and siksa-guru are non-different manifestations of Krsna.

Bhaktas are also not ordinary. They are the abode of Krsna. They are the asana (seat), vasana (clothing), and sayya (bed) for Krsna. Krsna can take rest in their hearts because their hearts are pure, free from worldly desires. In their hearts there are no sufferings or problems-as in the hearts of Srila Rupa and Srila Sanatana. They don't want anything from Krsna. Therefore He can take rest in their hearts and sleep very peacefully. The hearts of jnanis, karmis, and yogis are full of material desires.

"O Krsna give me a very beautiful wife. O Krsna I have no son. O Krsna I want liberation (mukti)." But Krsna's pure devotees don't want anything for themselves. Their only desire is for their bhakti to increase-to serve Krsna more and more 3.

These six manifestations: Krsna, diksa guru and siksa guru, the devotees, the diverse energies, the incarnations, and the plenary portions, are all Krsna Himself, but manifested separately for His pastimes (vilasa). They are bheda and abheda-different and non-different. This is called acintya-bhedabheda-tattva.

Vadanti tat tattva-vidas, tattvam yaj jnanam advayam, brahmeti paramatmeti, bhagavan iti sabdyate. Krsnadasa Kaviraja is explaining who is Krsna. Please read from Swami Maharaja's purport.

Devotee reads: Text: "Learned transcendentalists who know the Absolute Truth say that it is nondual knowledge and is called impersonal Brahman, localized Paramatma and the Personality of Godhead."

Purport: This Sanskrit verse appears as the eleventh verse of the First Canto, Second Chapter, of Srimad-Bhagavatam, where Suta Gosvami answers the questions of the sages headed by Saunaka si concerning the essence of all scriptural instructions. Tattva-vidah refers to persons who have knowledge of the Absolute Truth. They can certainly understand knowledge. [C-c, Adi-lila, 2.1]

Srila Maharaja: Narada, Vedavyasa, Brahma, Sankara, and Sukadeva Gosvami are all tattva-vit; they know the essence of the Vedic scriptures.

Devotee reads: They can certainly understand knowledge without duality because they are on the spiritual platform. The Absolute Truth is known sometimes as Brahman, sometimes as Paramatma and sometimes as Bhagavan.

Persons who are in knowledge of the truth know that one who tries to approach the Absolute simply by mental speculation will ultimately realize the impersonal Brahman, and one who tries to approach the Absolute through yoga practice will be able to realize Paramatma, but one who has complete knowledge and spiritual understanding realizes the spiritual form of Bhagavan, the Personality of Godhead.

Devotees of the Personality of Godhead know that Sri Krsna, the son of the King of Vraja, is the Absolute Truth. They do not discriminate between Sri Krsna's name, form, quality and pastimes. One who wants to separate the Lord's absolute name, form and qualities must be understood to be lacking in absolute knowledge. A pure devotee knows that when he chants the transcendental name Krsna, Sri Krsna is present as transcendental sound. . . .

Srila Maharaja: Yes. One thing you can remember:

yaha, bhagavata pada vaisnavera sthane ekanta asraya kara caitanya-carane

"If you want to understand Srimad-Bhagavatam," he [Svarupa Damodara] said, "you must approach a self-realized Vaisnava and hear from him. You can do this when you have completely taken shelter of the lotus feet of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu." [C-c, Antya-lila: 5.131]

Do not try to know about spiritual life only from books. Everything is in Vedanta, Srimad-Bhagavatam, Caitanya-caritamrta, and in the books of Swamiji; but the knowledge is under lock and key. A very powerful lock and key.

Because we are not so qualified we will not understand the meaning simply by reading. Yaha, bhagavata pada vaisnavera sthane. There are two types of bhagavata-grantha-bhagavata (sastra) and bhakta-bhagavata (Vaisnavas). The grantha-bhagavata is under lock and key and the realized soul, bhakta-bhagavata will reveal its meanings.

By reading Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Srimad-Bhagavatam, and Swami Maharaja's books in the association of superior devotees, we can know their meaning and experience the ocean of rasa contained within them. Without the help of an advanced Vaisnava one may read these books many times and, as we have seen, still fall down. Why? Without proper association one is unable to take the essence.

Go to a bhakta-bhagavata. They are more merciful than Srimad-Bhagavatam, and under their guidance we can realize the mercy of Srimad-Bhagavatam and Sri Krsna.

Otherwise it is not possible.

Try to listen attentively, and take this into your heart. Those who know this tattva, like Narada, Vyasa, Sankara, Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana, Srila Rupa Gosvami, etc. have concluded that nothing is separate from Krsna. Nothing is independent (svadhina). This is called advaya-jnana-tattva, and it is an essential fundamental truth.

Everyone is subordinate to Krsna-Baladeva and all other incarnations, all demigods and all living entities down to the ants and grass. Maya is also subordinate. The only one fundamental truth is Krsna, and all others are subordinate to Him. Is there a living entity in this world who is independent, in this or any other universe, or even in Vaikuntha or Goloka Vrndavana? No; only Krsna is independent.

All that we see is a manifestation of His power (kriya-sakti). Srimati Radhika is the power of Krsna, and Laksmi is the manifestation of Radhika. We jivas in this material world are also in Krsna, and this is called unity in diversity.

Those who are tattva-vit see this fundamental truth; that the Absolute Truth is Krsna. Srila Krsnadasa Kaviraja quotes this verse from Srimad-Bhagavatam [1.2.11]. Those with jnana see this Absolute Truth as Brahman. What is that Brahman? It is merely the perverted reflection of the rays of Krsna's toenail. It is without form, qualities, or pastimes. Paramatma is a part of Krsna's sat and cit potency. He is a small fraction of Krsna; He is not independent. So Krsna is called advaya jnana paratattva. Everything is in Him.

ete camsa-kalah pumsah krsnas tu bhagavan svayam indrari-vyakulam lokam mrdayanti yuge yuge

All of the above-mentioned incarnations are either plenary portions or portions of the plenary portions of the Lord, but Lord Sri Krsna is the original Personality of Godhead. All of them appear on planets whenever there is a disturbance created by the atheists. The Lord incarnates to protect the theists.

[Bhag. 1.3.28]

Krsna is that Supreme Personality of Godhead, Supreme Personality of Absolute Truth. Srimad-Bhagavatam and other sastras confirms this verse from Brahma-samhita: isvarah paramah krsnah sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah, anadir adir govindah sarva-karana-karanam. "Govinda, Krsna, is the cause of all causes. He is the primal cause, and He is the very form of eternity, knowledge and bliss." His manifestation is Baladeva Prabhu in Vraja. Baladeva Prabhu is non-different from Krsna. Only the color is different-one white, one black.

From Baladeva Prabhu, Mula Sankarsana, Maha Sankarsana, Maha-Visnu, Karanodakasayi, Garbhodakasayi, Ksirodakasayi, and Sesa have manifested.

So Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Absolute Truth, advents as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and His supreme power, Srimati Radhika, comes as Gadadhara.

After Krsna's pastimes at the end of Dvapara-yuga were completed, and He returned to His aprakat (unmanifest) Goloka Vrndavana, He began to think of the pure devotion that He wanted to distribute, even to the trees and creepers. Only Krsna would be able to give this. The yuga dharma, the religious principles for each age, can be given by Maha-Visnu (Advaita-Acarya), and this is His function, but He cannot give krsna-prema. Baladeva Prabhu also never gives it. He leaves it for Krsna to distribute. That very Krsna, who can give love and devotion to all, took the mood and color of Srimati Radhika, and became Sri Gauracandra. Why did He do this? Because His mercy is unparalleled and causeless. As the ocean of rasa, He wanted to taste the fulfillment of His three desires, and also bestow that krsna-prema, which had not been distributed to the jivas since the previous day of Lord Brahma.

anarpita-carim cirat karunayavatirnah kalau samarpayitum unnatojjvala-rasam sva-bhakti-sriyam harih purata-sundara-dyuti-kadamba-sandipitah sada hrdaya-kandare sphuratu vah saci-nandanah

May that Lord, Who is known as the son of Srimati Sacidevi, be transcendentally situated in the innermost chambers of your heart. Resplendent with the radiance of molten gold, He has appeared in the age of Kali by His causeless mercy to bestow what no incarnation ever offered before: the most sublime and radiant spiritual knowledge of the mellow taste of His service. [C-c, Adi-lila: 1.4]

The meaning of this sloka is deep, and the complete causeless mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is within it. You should understand the essence of this sloka and become very beautiful, qualified devotees. Without understanding this properly, chanting Hare Krsna alone is not sufficient to receive the Lord's full mercy. By understanding this sloka the quality of your chanting will enhance. With a clear understanding of this sloka and its mood, we can focus internally while chanting-otherwise we will not be able to do so. Mayavadis also chant Hare Krsna, but they go to hell.

Karmis also chant, but with the desire to increase money, name and fame. But one who chants under the guidance of a highly qualified guru or Vaisnava will develop a high class superlative quality of chanting. Otherwise, this Name will fulfill your material desires, but bhakti will not come. Try, therefore, to understand the essence of these instructions.

Qualities Of A Bonafide Guru

Mahadeva's instruction to Parvati - 'There may be many so called gurus in this world to squeeze money from disciples, but a Bonafide Guru who can remove the drawbacks and sufferings of disciples is very rare'. If we want quality, we cannot get quantity. If we are keen to increase quantity, we shall have to sacrifice quality. Who is Bonafide Guru? What are the characteristics of a Bonafide Guru? Prabuddha Muni's instructions in regard to this -

tasmad gurum prapadyeta
jijnasuh sreya uttamam
sabde pare ca nisnatam
brahmanyupasamasrayam (SB 11 / 3 / 21)

"Therefore, enquire Gurudeva about the best eternal welfare with complete submission to Him. A Bonafide Guru is endowed with two special qualities: 1) He is well-versed in authentic scriptures and 2) has realisation of Divinity".

sabde brahmani vede veda-tatparyya-jnapake sastrantare ca nisnatam nipunam, anyatha sisyasya samsaya-cchedabhave vaimanasya ca sati kasyacit sraddha-saithilyam api sambhavet. pare brahmani ca nisnatam aparoksanubhava-samartham, anyatha tat-kripa samyak phalavati na syat. para-brahma-nisnatatva-dyotakam aha, - upasam asrayam krodha-lobhady-avasibhutam

Sreela Vishvanath Chakravarty in his commentary explained the characteristics of a Bonafide Guru. Gurudeva should be well-versed in the Vedas and other allied scriptures. An aspirant disciple cannot progress in his worship of God without taking shelter of a really qualified Bonafide Guru, who should have the capacity of removing the doubts of disciples by reasoning substantiated with evidence from authentic scriptures. If Gurudeva is incapable of removing the doubts of the disciple, the disciple's belief in Him may slacken. The second characteristic of Gurudeva is that He should have realisation of the Divinity. Only by theoretical knowledge of the scriptures, without having practical realisation, Spiritual Guide cannot give proper advice and direction in accordance to the eligibility of the disciple. By the instruction of a Guru possessing the quality of practical realisation, the disciple can have actual spiritual progress. It is to be considered here, a disciple can have the capacity to comprehend scriptural knowledge of Gurudeva by hearing from Him; but how can a disciple understand whether Gurudeva has got realisation of Divinity or not? Supreme Lord is Transcendental Reality, His Absolute Counterpart Gurudeva is also Transcendental. Therefore, a neophyte votary cannot understand Gurudeva's realisation of Divinity by his own endeavour.

There are two aspects of Supreme Lord and His Absolute Counterpart Gurudeva - (1) morphological aspect and (2) ontological aspect. Conditioned souls can by their mind, intellect and sense-organs grasp the morphological, i.e. the external aspect of the thing - thing as it appears - and not the thing as it is. The thing as it is, can be realised only by the grace of Transcendental Realities, through unconditional complete surrender. As for example the self-luminous sun can only be known by it's own light and not by the help of other lights. We cannot see sun in the night with the help of other lights, but when sun rises, by accepting the grace of the sun-it's light- we can see the sun and all things of this world in the proper perspective. Supreme Lord and His Absolute Counterpart Gurudeva are self-effulgent. Sree Vishwanath Chakravarty Thakur, in his commentary, has given to the bonafide neophyte aspirants, a clue to recognise Guru by one external quality - a Bonafide Guru is not subdued by passions- anger, greed etc.

Of course, realised soul can use the passions for the service of Supreme Lord and for the eternal benefit of conditioned souls, but He can never be subjugated by them. Sree Narottam Thakur has advised us how the cardinal passions can be used for the service of Sree Krishna, except for malice -'Kama krisna-karam-arpane, krodha bhaktadvesijane, lobha sadhusange harikatha, moha ista-labhavine, mada krisnagungane niyukta kariba yatha tatha'. Kama - passion for fulfillment of desires should be diverted to desire to serve Krishna, 'anger' should be used against those who are hostile to devotees, 'greed' should be employed to increase the desire to hear Hari-Katha from a bonafide sadhu, 'infatuation' should be over not being able up till now to utilise the valuable time of this precious human birth for worship of Sree Krishna and 'madness' should be after singing the glories of Sree Krishna. Even Narada Goswami, out of compassion, used anger on the sons of Kuber- Nalkuber and Manigriva- to rescue them. According to Gita, the cause of anger is obstruction to fulfillment of one's desire. A real devotee cannot have any desire of his own except service of Sree Krishna. So, in a pure devotee, there cannot be any possibility of the origination of such anger due to hindrance to worldly desires.

It is essential for the votary to submit to Gurudeva wholeheartedly with words, mind, sense-organs and everything, for realisation of Divinity. Evidence-Mundaka Sruti:-

Pariksa lokan karma-citan brahmano
Nirvedamayannastyakritah kritena
tad-vijnanartham sa gurumevabhigacchet
samit-panih srotriyam brahma-nistham (Mundaka Sruti 1 / 2 / 12)

A brahmin should have the knowledge that the fruits of Karma are non-eternal and Eternal Reality cannot be attained by karma. As such a brahmin has no attachment to karma and therefore, he takes absolute shelter at the Lotus Feet of a Bonafide Guru. Two characteristics of Bonafide Guru are mentioned in Mundaka Sruti- 'Srotriyam' and 'Brahma-Nistham'. Interpretations of the word 'Srotriyam -(1) Well-versed in Sruti sastras - the Vedas and other allied scriptures and (2) blessed by the descent of the Divine knowledge through preceptorial channel.

Supreme Lord is Transcendental and beyond comprehension of human intellect, mind and sense-organs. He is 'Asamorddhva', i.e. there is no one equal to Him or more than Him. So, His grace is the only means of getting Him. At the beginning of creation, when Brahma originated from the navel of Supreme Lord, Supreme Lord imparted Divine knowledge to him out of compassion.

jnanam parama-guhyam me
yad vijnana-samanvitam
sarahasyam tad-angam ca
grihana gaditam maya (SB 2. 9. 30)

'I tell you the most secret of all secrets for esoteric realisation of Divinity. Accept it and practice different forms of devotion to get the objective'.

Brahma, after realisation, imparted that Divine knowledge to Narada Goswami and Narada Goswami to Vyas Deva - in this way the knowledge of Divinity is extended through preceptorial channel or disciplic channel. Sree Amarartha Chandrika has interpreted the word 'Amnaya' as 'Sampradaya'. The etymological meaning of 'Sampradaya'is Divine Knowledge descending through bonafide preceptorial channel where sanctity of knowledge is correctly and completely retained. Nowadays due to prostitution of language, 'Sampradaya' is misinterpreted as 'sectarianism'.

sampradaya-vihina ye mantras te nisphala matah
sadhanaughair na sidhyanti, koti-kalpa-satair api
atah kalau bhavisyanti, catvarah sampradayainah
sri-brahma-rudra-sanaka, vaisnavah ksiti-pavanah (Padma Purana)

All mantras without connection to 'Sampradaya', or not received through preceptorial channel, are fruitless. Practise of such mantras for millions and millions of years will be in vain. Therefore, four bonafide sampradayas in this Kaliyuga (black age)-- 'Shree' (Lakshmi), 'Brahma', 'Rudra' and 'Sanak'- have appeared to rescue the fallen souls. It is stated in 'Premeya Ratnavali', written by Sree Baladeva Vidyabhushan Prabhu that 'Shree', i.e. 'Lakshmi Devi' has accepted 'Ramanuja' (other names- Ramanandi or Ramait), Brahma has accepted Madhvacharya (another name- Madhvi), 'Rudra'-Visnuswami (other names- Vallabhacharya or Vallabhi) and 'Chatuhson' (other names- Sanak, Sanandan, Sanatan and Sanatkumar) -- Nimbaditya (other names- Nimat or Nimbarka or Nimanandi) as Acharyas of the respective sampradayas. "Sree 'Brahma' Sampradaya is the preceptorial channel of the devout devotees of Sree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. In conformity to this preceptorial channel, Sree Kavi Karnapur Goswami has determined 'Guru-Pranali' (succession of Gurus) in his own writing - Gaur-Ganadesha Dipika". Sree Baladeva Vidyabhushan, commentator of Vedanta-Sutra, has firmly corroborated this. Those who disown this Guru-Pranali, are considered to be the greatest foes against the verdict of Sree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's followers and personal associates. Acceptance of the system of bonafide sampradaya is absolutely necessary. Therefore, from ancient times, this acceptance of the system of bonafide sampradaya is very acutely followed by sadhus. Those who have understood the significance of the teachings of the Vedas through preceptorial channel from Brahma, have accepted this perfect representation. Others, having diverted from this opinion, have become the slaves of various blasphemous atheistic views"

Sree Bhakti Vinod Vani Vaibhav Kavi Karnapur in his book Gaur-Ganadesh Dipika, has ascertained Guru Parampara (succession of Gurus) in this way :-

tatra maddhavisampradayah prastavadatra likhyate parabrahmesvarasayasicchiyo jagatpatih

Parampara (preceptorial channel):- Brahma is the disciple of the Lord of Transcendental Realm. From Brahma, gradual succession - Narada - Vyas Deva - Madhvacharya - Padmanabhacharya - Narahari - Madhava - Akshobhya - Jayatirtha - Jnanasindhu - Mahanidhi - Vidyanidhi - Rajendra - Jayadharma - Purushottama - Vyasatirtha - Lakshmipati - Madhavendrapuri - Ishvarapuri - Sree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
Sreela Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur in his 'anubhasya' (commentary) on Sree Chaitanya Charitamrita, remembers Guru Parampara from Sree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and prays their grace as follows:-

rupanuga janera jivana
viswambhara priyankara, sri-swarupa damodara,
tara mitra rupa-sanatana,
rupa-priya mahajana, raghunatha bhaktadhana,

jara pada viswanatha-asa,
bhaktaraja viswanatha, tahe sraddho jagannatha,
tara priya bhakativinoda,
maha-bhagavata-bara, sri-gaurakisora-bara,
hari-bhajanete ja'ra moda,
ei saba harijana, gaurangera nijajana,
tadera ucchiste yara kama,
sri-varsabhanavi-bara, sada sevya-seva-para,
tahara dayita-dasa-nama,
harijana-seva-asa, bhakti-vriddhi-abhilasa
pravaha-bhasyera anugata,
gaur-jana-sastra dekhi,' sei anusarya likhi,
'anubhasya' rupanuga mata

Śrīla Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī

Śrīmatī Rādhikā's bodily complexion snatches away the pride of a golden lotus flower tinged with kuṅkuma, Her bodily fragrance reproaches the fame of a fragrant lotus sprinkled with saffron powder, and She fulfills all the desires of the prince of Vraja, Śrī Kṛṣṇa. May that Śrīmatī Rādhikā always bestow upon me the service of Her lotus feet. (1)

Śrīmatī Rādhikā's dazzling, colorful silk sārī defeats the splendour of coral; She is a garden of all varieties of blooming flowers which attract the maddened bumblebee Śrī Kṛṣṇa who comes to play amongst Her flowers, and She worships the sun-god in order to meet with Kṛṣṇa eternally. May that Śrīmatī Rādhikā always bestow upon me the service of Her lotus feet. (2)

Śrīmatī Rādhikā's softness defeats the fame of delicate budding flowers; Her bodys coolness is worshipable for the moon, sandalwood-paste, the lotus, and camphor; and Her touch dispels the heat of Gopī-jana-vallabha Śrī Kṛṣṇas amorous desires. May that Śrīmatī Rādhikā always bestow upon me the service of Her lotus feet. (3)

Although Lakṣmī-devī is honoured by all the worshipable damsels of the universe, the opulence of her great beauty and ever-fresh youthfulness is overshadowed by that of Śrīmatī Rādhikā. Nor can Lakṣmī-devī surpass Her by her natural loving and playful disposition. May that Śrīmatī Rādhikā always bestow upon me the service of Her lotus feet. (4)

Śrīmatī Rādhikā is paṇḍitā (expert) in all the celestial arts of the rāsa-līlā, like dancing, singing, and joking; She is adorned with supernatural prema, enchanting beauty, wonderful dresses and ornaments, and all divine virtues; and She is the topmost youthful maiden of Vraja. May that Śrīmatī Rādhikā always bestow upon me the service of Her lotus feet. (5)

Śrīmatī Rādhikā, by Her ever-fresh beauty, ever-fresh playfulness, and ever-fresh wealth of affection, causes all the young maidens of Vraja, who are bound in love to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, to tremble in anxiety; and She is immersed in samādhi upon Śrī Kṛṣṇas beauty, attire, and playful pastimes. May that Śrīmatī Rādhikā always bestow upon me the service of Her lotus feet. (6)

Śrīmatī Rādhikā in divine ecstasy manifests perspiration, hairs standing on end, trembling, tears, and a choked voice; She is adorned with indignation, joy, and contrariness; and She wears splendid jewel-studded ornaments which delight Śrī Kṛṣṇas eyes. May that Śrīmatī Rādhikā always bestow upon me the service of Her lotus feet. (7)

Śrīmatī Rādhikā, upon being separated from Śrī Kṛṣṇa for even half a moment, becomes distressed by the ever-arising feelings of Her own lowliness and great restlessness; and She is relieved of all Her mental anguish upon meeting Kṛṣṇa through the intense efforts of one of Their messengers. May that Śrīmatī Rādhikā always bestow upon me the service of Her lotus feet. (8)

Śrīmatī Rādhikā, whose darśana is rarely attained even by Pārvatī-devī and other goddesses, who gives great pleasure to Her sakhīs, who Herself becomes elated upon meeting with Śrī Kṛṣṇa, and who is Kṛṣṇas dearest lover, very quickly makes that person who prays to Her singing this aṣṭaka a recipient for the nectar of Her service. Hoy día sábado 7 de Enero del 2012, Su Divina Gracia Srila Bhakti Kumud Santa Goswami Maharaj, ha entrado en Maha-samadhi en Calcuta. Él es el último de los discípulos de Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Prabhupada que han decidido manifestar su Nitya-lila.

Srila Bhakti Kumud Santa Goswami Maharaja es el Fundador - Acharya de Sri Gauranga Math (Kesiary), Sri Chaitanya Ashram (Kharagpur, Puri, Calcutta) y Sri Gaur Saraswat Santa Gaudiya Math (Chhekati y Baradiya). La aparición de Su Divina Gracia, Srila Bhakti Kumud Santa Goswami Maharaja ocurrió en el lugar auspicioso relacionado con la aparición de Srila Shyamananda y Srila Rasikananda, en el distrito Medinapur de Bengala Occidental. Eternally sheltered at the lotus feet of The Founder - Acharya of World wide Sri Gaudiya Math and Jagadguru Om Vishnupad Paramhans Parivrajakacharya 108 Sri Srimad Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Thakur Prabhupada .

The appearance of His Divine Grace Srimad Bhakti Kumud Santa Goswami Maharaja took place in the auspicious place related to the place of appearance of Srila Shyamananda and Srila Rasikananda, in the Medinapur district of West Bengal. He appeared mercifully on 2nd day of Baisakh of 1921 the first month of Bengali Calendar in the house of well-renowned astrologer, doctor and landlord, Sri Vaikunthanath Roy in the village "Narma". His mother Srimati Ratnamayi Devi was a devout lady absorbed in worships. He was the third and youngest son of his father and his name given by his father was "Radharaman". Usually he used to remain immersed in the worship of Sri Anantdeva and Sri Gopal dev, on contrary of passing time in playing as other children used to.

By the divine planning of Lord Krishna, the stalwart disciples of Srila Prabhupada , like Bhakti Hridoy Bon Maharaja, Bhakti Promode Puri Maharaja, Bhakti Dayita Madhava Maharaja, could point out the para-normal attitude of the child, Sri Radharaman and got astonished at the same. His father also Sri Radha Madanmohanji, Sri Chaitanya Ashram, Behala Calcutta discussed with devotees about the possibility of the study of Sri Radharaman at the Sri math. When the devotees discussed this point with Srila Prabhupada , the latter readily allowed for the same. To see whether the child can adjust in the math, the eleven year child Sri Radharaman was taken to Sri math by his father. The child was attracted by the effulgence of divine lotus feet of Srila Prabhupada and showed his inclination to stay with him He was admitted to the New Indian School near Scottish Church College of Calcutta. During his study, he used to participate in the Kirtan and different programs of Sri math. His natural aptitude for Sankirtan and his sweet voice pleased Srila Prabhupada and the then Sannyasis. During his study he was given Sri Harinam. After the completion of the study at the school, he was sent to study Sanskrit by Gour Das Pandit, at Sri Mayapur.

Srila Prabhupada organized a colossal spiritual exhibition from 3rd Feb to 17th March, 1930 at Sri Mayapur and engaged Sri Radharaman in different services in this. Pleased by serving temperament of Sri Radharaman, Srila Prabhupada gave him saffron dress on 20th March of 1930. Srila Prabhupada organized an unparalleled exhibition in Dacca on 6th Jan, 1933 for extending the Vedic knowledge to the mass public. Having seen the unexpected capability of explaining the subject matter of the exhibition on the basis of scripture to the visitors, Srila Prabhupada was pleased at Sri Radharaman and sent him with Sri Srimad Bhakti Hridoy Bon maharaja for preaching program at several places of present day Bangladesh. Afterwards, Srila Prabhupada entrusted him with the responsibility of Sri Prapanna Ashram, located at Brahmanpara in the district of Howrah. Being satisfied by his efficient and single-handed management and preaching he was sent to Pai-Bareili, Shikarpur, Karachi, Pune etc. for disseminating Krishna Katha in Hindi Language.

Sri Radharaman was sent by Srila Prabhupada to Burma for preaching on 8th March 1936. When Sri Radharaman was leaving for Rangoon, Srila Prabhupada came personally to see him off and he told him while adorning him with his prasadi mala "Dear Radharaman! You are crossing this ocean at a very young age. May Lord Krishna bestow His Mercy upon you". During his preaching at Mandalay, when he read Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita and came across the verse "Jivera Svaroop hoy Krishner nitya das", he was inspired to write an article "Guru dasatva hoy mor parichay". He sent this article to Srila Prabhupada for its publication in "Daily Nadia Prakash". After going through the article Srila Prabhupada was extremely pleased at the faultless content of the article, blessed Sri Radharaman and ordered Srila Puri Maharaja to print the same in the daily paper. Later on, Sri Radharaman went for circumambulation of Sri Mayapur, following the order of Srila Prabhupada. Pleased by his selfless service, Srila Prabhupada bestowed his blessing to him giving him the title of "RAGA KUMUD". In the appreciation of Sri Radha Raman he wrote:

geetsevanuraktaya vipulotsahasamyuje

Therefore, the word "Kumud" was latter on used in the sannyas name of Sri Srimad Bhakti Kumud Santa Goswarni Maharaja.

Srila Prabhupada installed the Sri Vigraha in Gaudiya Math., Madras on 23rd Jan, 1932. After the completion of Sri Navadwip Dham Parikrama, Srila Prabhupada sent Sri Radha Raman Das to Madras for preaching, with Sannyasis. But, on 1st Jan 1937, at 5.00 a.m., Srila Prabhupada left his disciples drowned in the ocean of separation and distress at Sri Gaudiya math. Baghbazar, Calcutta. This news aggrieved Sri Radharaman, he left Madras at once and returned to Calcutta with Srila Bhakti Dayit Madhav Maharaja and from there went to Sri Chaitanya Math Mayapur.

After the demise of Srila Prabhupada , Sri Radharaman travelled extensively and had darshan of different pilgrimage with Srila Bhakti Bhudeva Srauti Maharaja. After the completion of Tirthatan, he went to his native place and started austerity and bhajan near the temple of Sri Sri Radha Kishori Mohan Jiu. During this time Srila Prabhupada appeared in his dream and ordered him to accept the renounced order of life and preach the teachings of Lord Chaitanya. Following the order of his spiritual master, Sri Radharaman Das took Sannyas from Srila Bhakti Vichar Yayabar Maharaj at the auspicious premises of Lordship Sri Sri Kshira Chora Gopinathji, at Remuna on 12th Feb, 1942. He was named as Srimad Bhakti Kumud Santa. For continuous 32 years, he preached throughout India and directed the Mayapur Navadwip Dham Parikrama along with Bhakti Vilas Tirtha Maharaj. He rendered the service of offering melodious bhajans and eloquent lectures for the pleasure of Vaishnavas which is still remembered by the senior Vaishnavas.

His Divine Grace inspired the souls to take darshan of Holy places by organising spiritual tour programs, in which he used to outline the importance of such places elaborately. He went abroad in 1975 for propagating the timeless teachings of Srila Prabhupada and inundated the countries like Great Britain, West Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Holland, Belgium with the same.

He installed his loving Deities Sri Radha Gopinath, Sri Sri Radha Govindji and Sri Radha Madanmohanji resp. at Sri Gauranga Math. Kesiary, Sri Chaitanya Ashram Kharagpur and Sri Chaitanya Ashram Behala, Calcutta. They are being served with utmost devotion by him and his disciples. Later on, due to the repeated loving insistence of his disciples, he started Sri Chaitanya Ashram Puri where the deity is called Sri Radha Raman after his Brahmachari name. At Chheketi, located in uttar 24 parganas, Sri Sri Radha Madhav Ji is served with love in Sri Gaur Saraswat Sant Gaudiya Math.

His service to the Vaishnava literature is also worth - appreciating contribution for the vaishnava as well as entire humanity. His books like "Samlape Shiksha", "Patre Upadesh", "Geeta Siddhant Sar", "Sant Vani", "Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhur Jiveni", "Sadhan Kan", "Damodar Vrat Mahatmya", "Bhakti Geeti", "Diksha" have been casting divine light on the royal path of pure devotion. Besides these books, he translated into Bengali a few books which "Moh mudgar" and "Moh Kuthar" are important.

Starting from the tender age of 11 years, he has now completed his 87 years at the lotus feet of Srila Prabhupada , serving incessantly Sri Guru and Gauranga, Vaishanvas and entire world.

Therefore, on this auspicious occasion of the appearance day of our most reverened Srila Guru Maharaja, we pray at the lotus feet of Srila Prabhupada that he please keep his glittering lamp burning for a long long time, so that souls like ourselves, engrossed in darkness, may get light for proceeding in the ultimate path of devotion.

One more star of the Gaudiya sky faded from mundane sight

Today we have read at VINA News Blog a report by Sripad Prahlad Das from Sree Chaitanya Gaudiya Math, which makes us to know that Sri Srimad Bhakti Kumud Sant Goswami Maharaj - the last living disciple of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur Prabhupada - has left His body.

Most Revered Siksha Guru Sri Srimad Bhakti Kumud Sant Goswami Maharaj leaves His dear disciples, associates and followers in separation grief today. This is a great loss not only to the Gaudiya Vaishnavas but to the entire world. One of the brightest stars in the Gaudiya sky, Srila Bhakti Kumud Sant Goswami Maharaj took His last breath at 1.05 AM IST today in a private nursing home.

Earlier Srila Maharaj was admitted to the hospital as He had problem in respiration due to severe cold few days ago. Doctors also diagnosed that He had fever, sugar and lever problem. These external things just became apparent cause but ultimately it was His desire to be part of the mid-night eternal pastimes of the Lord. He is the last disciple of Nitya-lila Pravista Om Vishnupad 108 Sri Srimad Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur Prabhupad, the Founder of world-wide Sri Chaitanya Math, Sri Gaudiya Math and Sri Gaudiya Missions to leave this planet.

At 9.45 AM IST Srila Maharaj's transcendental body was brought to the Math in Behala, Kolkata and was placed in front of the Deities. He was performed Arati, Pushpanjali. Countless devotees of various organizations visited the math and offered flowers to His body. Later He was shifted to the bhajan kutir in the 2nd floor where devotees stood in queue to get their turn to have darsan of His transcendental body. The grief of the devotees cannot be phrased and expressed in any language of the world.

From our Math Srila Bhakti Saurabh Acharya Maharaj, Srila Bhakti Pangat Sannyasi Maharaj and few other Brahmacharis along with two personal sevaks of Srila Gurudev went to Behala Math to offer flowers and homage to Srila Maharaj. Srila Gurudev sent a flower garland to Srila Sant Goswami Maharaj that was offered to the later by Srila Acharya Maharaj. Srila Gurudev accepted the Prasad garland of Srila Sant Goswami Maharaj with great reverence. Srila Maharaj's transcendetal body will be taken to Narma near Medinipur where Srila Sant Goswami Maharaj appeared. There is a 400 year old Sri Radha Kishore Jiu temple at that place where Srila Sant Goswami Maharaj used to visit in His childhood. From there He would be taken to Sri Chaitanya Ashram in Kharagpur. Later He would be taken to Keshiari where He established Sri Gauranga Math and the final samadhi will take place there.

When informed, Most Revered Srila Gurudev took the message in shock. He remembered Srila Sant Goswami Maharaj's affection to Him in the past and also His recent visit to the Behala Math (http://www.sreecgmath.org/scgmhome/node/46). Srila Guru Maharaj mentioned, "He used to give me Prasad whenever I went there. He used to show lot of affection. This time also when I went I held His hand and spoke but He did not speak anything. He was the only one left among the disciples of Srila Prabhupad but now He also left. Anything may happen anyime." He paused for a while and said again, "Even Sriman Mahaprabhu exhibited the pastimes only for 48 years", probably indicating that it is the desire of the Lord and His devotees to perfrom more pastimes on earth or go back to their original place.

Srila Bhakti Vigyan Bharati Maharaj said, "Srila Sant Goswami Maharaj was very powerful in his speech and very bold too. One time in a Harikatha assembly the guest speaker said that all jivas are non-different from brahman quoting the vedas - jiva brahmaiva na param (living entities are none other than brahman). Immediately Sant Goswami Maharaj stood up and rushed towards the speaker to beat him. He reacted and went aback. Srila Sant Maharaj proceeded towards Him and again showed him the fist as if to beat him. He again tried to save himself. Like this Srila Sant Maharaj feared the speaker 3-4 times and the guest everytime tried to protect himself from the attack. Later Srila Sant Goswami Maharaj said, 'Brahman is nirvikar (unperturbed). If you are brahman why are you getting vikar (perturbed)?' All the devotees and other members laughed and the speaker became silent and ashamed."

Srila Bhakti Saurabh Acharya Maharaj broke into tears while He was giving Jaya-dhvani of Srila Sant Goswami Maharaj after Mangala-arati today. While on the way to Behala Math today he recollected, "Srila Sant Goswami Maharaj had lot of respect and regard to our Gurudev. After Srila Prabhupad's disappearance Srila Sant Maharaj (he was Sri Radharaman brahmachari that time) left the Math and desired to enter household life. He went to a place near Medinipur for marriage. Knowing this our Gurudev walked to that place from Medinipur on an Ekadasi day. Our Gurudev used to observe Nirjala (fast even from water) on all ekadasis. So though He was fasting and tired of programs He walked to the place of Sri Radharaman Das's parents and convinced them. After they were convinced He went to Sri Radharaman Das. As soon as he saw our Gurudev, he stood up in reveration and payed obeissances. Srila Gurudev spoke with him for a while explaining why he should remain celebate for his entire life and propagate the message of Sriman Mahaprabhu. Srila Sant Maharaj felt as if Srila Prabhupad had come in the form of our Gurudev to show him the right path. Later he gave up his family and joined the institute of Srila Prabhupad taking a vow that he will never ever enter household life."

The appearance of His Divine Grace Srimad Bhakti Kumud Santa Goswami Maharaja took place in the auspicious place related to the place of appearance of Srila Shyamananda and Srila Rasikananda, in the Medinapur district of West Bengal. He appeared mercifully on 2nd day of Baisakh of 1921 the first month of Bengali Calendar in the house of well-renowned astrologer, doctor and landlord, Sri Vaikunthanath Roy in the village "Narma". His mother Srimati Ratnamayi Devi was a devout lady absorbed in worships. He was the third and youngest son of his father and his name given by his father was "Radharaman". Usually he used to remain immersed in the worship of Sri Anantdeva and Sri Gopal dev, on contrary of passing time in playing as other children used to.

By the divine planning of Lord Krishna, the stalwart disciples of Srila Prabhupada , like Bhakti Hridoy Bon Maharaja, Bhakti Promode Puri Maharaja, Bhakti Dayita Madhava Maharaja, could point out the para-normal attitude of the child, Sri Radharaman and got astonished at the same. His father also Sri Radha Madanmohanji, Sri Chaitanya Ashram, Behala Calcutta discussed with devotees about the possibility of the study of Sri Radharaman at the Sri math. When the devotees discussed this point with Srila Prabhupada , the latter readily allowed for the same. To see whether the child can adjust in the math, the eleven year child Sri Radharaman was taken to Sri math by his father.

The child was attracted by the effulgence of divine lotus feet of Srila Prabhupada and showed his inclination to stay with him He was admitted to the New Indian School near Scottish Church College of Calcutta. During his study, he used to participate in the Kirtan and different programs of Sri math. His natural aptitude for Sankirtan and his sweet voice pleased Srila Prabhupada and the then Sannyasis. During his study he was given Sri Harinam. After the completion of the study at the school, he was sent to study Sanskrit by Gour Das Pandit, at Sri Mayapur.

Srila Prabhupada organized a colossal spiritual exhibition from 3rd Feb to 17th March, 1930 at Sri Mayapur and engaged Sri Radharaman in different services in this. Pleased by serving temperament of Sri Radharaman, Srila Prabhupada gave him saffron dress on 20th March of 1930. Srila Prabhupada organized an unparalleled exhibition in Dacca on 6th Jan, 1933 for extending the Vedic knowledge to the mass public. Having seen the unexpected capability of explaining the subject matter of the exhibition on the basis of scripture to the visitors, Srila Prabhupada was pleased at Sri Radharaman and sent him with Sri Srimad Bhakti Hridoy Bon maharaja for preaching program at several places of present day Bangladesh.

Afterwards, Srila Prabhupada entrusted him with the responsibility of Sri Prapanna Ashram, located at Brahmanpara in the district of Howrah. Being satisfied by his efficient and single-handed management and preaching he was sent to Pai-Bareili, Shikarpur, Karachi, Pune etc. for disseminating Krishna Katha in Hindi Language.

Sri Radharaman was sent by Srila Prabhupada to Burma for preaching on 8th March 1936. When Sri Radharaman was leaving for Rangoon, Srila Prabhupada came personally to see him off and he told him while adorning him with his prasadi mala "Dear Radharaman! You are crossing this ocean at a very young age. May Lord Krishna bestow His Mercy upon you". During his preaching at Mandalay, when he read Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita and came across the verse "Jivera Svaroop hoy Krishner nitya das", he was inspired to write an article "Guru dasatva hoy mor parichay". He sent this article to Srila Prabhupada for its publication in "Daily Nadia Prakash".

After going through the article Srila Prabhupada was extremely pleased at the faultless content of the article, blessed Sri Radharaman and ordered Srila Puri Maharaja to print the same in the daily paper. Later on, Sri Radharaman went for circumambulation of Sri Mayapur, following the order of Srila Prabhupada. Pleased by his selfless service, Srila Prabhupada bestowed his blessing to him giving him the title of "RAGA KUMUD". In the appreciation of Sri Radha Raman he wrote:

geetsevanuraktaya vipulotsahasamyuje

drahmachari padanka SRI radharaman sangyine

dhan pracharinisamsat satyaistasmai pradiyate

rag kumud ityaitadupanamadya sadaram

sunishuvasushuvhramshu shake mayapure vare

phalgun purnimayat sri gauravirvhava vasare

Therefore, the word "Kumud" was latter on used in the sannyas name of Sri Srimad Bhakti Kumud Santa Goswarni Maharaja.

Srila Prabhupada installed the Sri Vigraha in Gaudiya Math., Madras on 23rd Jan, 1932. After the completion of Sri Navadwip Dham Parikrama, Srila Prabhupada sent Sri Radha Raman Das to Madras for preaching, with Sannyasis. But, on 1st Jan 1937, at 5.00 a.m., Srila Prabhupada left his disciples drowned in the ocean of separation and distress at Sri Gaudiya math. Baghbazar, Calcutta. This news aggrieved Sri Radharaman, he left Madras at once and returned to Calcutta with Srila Bhakti Dayit Madhav Maharaja and from there went to Sri Chaitanya Math Mayapur.

After the demise of Srila Prabhupada , Sri Radharaman travelled extensively and had darshan of different pilgrimage with Srila Bhakti Bhudeva Srauti Maharaja. After the completion of Tirthatan, he went to his native place and started austerity and bhajan near the temple of Sri Sri Radha Kishori Mohan Jiu. During this time Srila Prabhupada appeared in his dream and ordered him to accept the renounced order of life and preach the teachings of Lord Chaitanya. Following the order of his spiritual master, Sri Radharaman Das took Sannyas from Srila Bhakti Vichar Yayabar Maharaj at the auspicious premises of Lordship Sri Sri Kshira Chora Gopinathji, at Remuna on 12th Feb, 1942. He was named as Srimad Bhakti Kumud Santa. For continuous 32 years, he preached throughout India and directed the Mayapur Navadwip Dham Parikrama along with Bhakti Vilas Tirtha Maharaj. He rendered the service of offering melodious bhajans and eloquent lectures for the pleasure of Vaishnavas which is still remembered by the senior Vaishnavas.

His Divine Grace inspired the souls to take darshan of Holy places by organising spiritual tour programs, in which he used to outline the importance of such places elaborately. He went abroad in 1975 for propagating the timeless teachings of Srila Prabhupada and inundated the countries like Great Britain, West Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Holland, Belgium with the same.

A Lecture by His Divine Grace

Sri Srila Bhakti Kumud Santa Maharaja

My respected bhaktas (listeners), I was invited by my beloved Nandanandana to attend the celebration on the occasion of the Abirbhava (appearance) of Sripad Vamana Maharaja, the Acharya of Sri Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti.

In recent days some persons present themselves as the initiated ones of Gaudiya Math and speak of many matters full of apasidhanta (contrary to established decisions). As an instance, they say that the birthday of the Acharya will not be observed. The day of his initiation will be observed. It is a fully wrong decision. It can never be. According to the shastras:

ishwarer janmathithi je hano pabitra,
vaisnavaro janmatithi se hano pavitra

"The appearance of God is holy. The birthday of Vaishnava is also holy"

Those who think that the birth of their guru is birth only are unfortunates. Birth is of the jivas bounded by the results of their karma (works). If the God or Vaishnava appear in the world, then this is not an ordinary birth, but their Abirbhava (appearance). Whenever they go away from this world it means it is their Tirobhava (disappearance). The tithis (days) of their appearance in the world are very holy for their sisyas and are to be observed. On their observation Hari Bhakti (devotion to Hari) will be resulted. If they are not observed violation will be inevitable as per the Mahajanas:

abirbhava tirobhava veda matrakai

"The Vedas speak of Abirbhava and Tirobhava only".

The Sun rises. It does not mean that it takes birth. It is faulty. On the other hand the sun has set. It does not mean that it is no more. It is a faulty deduction. Whenever it comes to us it is its Abirbhava. With its disappearance Tirobhava is meant. They do not come by birth. They do not also breathe their last. Thus it is said in the Gita:

janma karma ca me divyam
evam yo vetti tavttvatah
tyaktva deham punar janma
naiti mameti so 'rjuna
Srimad Bhagavad Gita, 4.9

"One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna".

Krishna said that "My birth and work are divya". Divya means transcendental and it is not materialistic. One is customary material. The other is spiritual. It will be an aparadha (offence) if customary and materials matters are united with spiritualism.

Now the initiated persons of Sripad Vamana Maharaja are fortunate ones.

What is Guru-Tattva (knowledge about the guru)? First of all understand it and then proceed. Do not pay hate to what is being said by others. I am old now. I do not see, sometimes I can not remember thing known by me. So, with an urge for a discussion I came here after jotting down so many points one after another. I shall try to speak of that matter by its reading. Please, try to understand me.

According to shastra:

guru-padashrayas tasmat
krishna-dikshadi-shikshanam
vishrambhena guroh seva
sadhu vartanuvartamanam
Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu, 1.2.74)

"[1] Accepting the shelter of the lotus feet of a bona fide spiritual master,

[2] becoming initiated by the spiritual master and learning how to discharge devotional service from him,

[3] obeying the orders of the spiritual master with faith and devotion, and

[4] following in the footsteps of great acaryas [teachers] under the direction of the spiritual master".**

"First of all, the lotus feet of a guru are to be taken shelter of. Diksha guru and siksha guru are to be followed. The guru is to be served with faith in him. The path of a saints should be followed". If one desires to be a pathfinder of the spiritual realm and is willing of going to the Lord, he hasto take shelter of the lotus feet of a guru: "guru-padashrayas". What is the meaning of "ashraya"? "Ashraya" means "taking diksha". Diksha is to betaken. One will have to take from him not only diksha but also siksha.

What is more? He is to be served the guru with faith in him. Yes, he willhave to bear in mind that if I serve him (guru) I shall have welfare. Not only that, he has to give up maintaining material dealings. He has toposses a spiritual faith. What is spoken of by "vishvasa"?

shraddha-shabde vishvasa kahe sudridha nishcaya,
krishne-bhakti kaile sarva karma krita haya

Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Madhya-lila, 22.62)

ïShraddha is confident, firm faith that by rendering transcendental loving service to Krishna one automatically performs all subsidiary activities. Such faith is favorable to the discharge of devotional service].

"The word "sraddha" means "strong faith". If Krishna is shown bhakti all works will be done".

It is described as "vishvasa". "Sraddha" means vishvasa point. How is this vishvasa. I shall give you one instance: Krishna is returning after tending the cows. Sridham, Sudhama, Vasudhama and other companions began to drink water of Kaliyadaha. He came running to them, slept each and asked, "What are you doing? This water is poisoned. If a bird flighs over the water it will die. And you are drinking it, you will surely die". What did the companions answer? "Kanai, Your companions do not love You with this sort of insignificant faith. We know that the water we are drinking is not poisoned it is nectar. We can not drink poison", Krishna sees from behind that they are drinking the poisoned nectar. — "Our death can not happen". This is faith. Therefore, if the order of a guru is carried out after placing faith in his lotus feet and then he is worshipped and served, my welfare will come forth. The sisya who will go forward with this faith will be rewarded with self welfare. What is this? The honest way we shall follow will be shown by him. He will show the way. This is guru-tattva. It has to be understood properly. Further:

tasmad gurum prapadyeta
jijnasuh sreya uttamam
sabde pare ca nisnatam
brahamany upasamasrayam
Srimad Bhagavatam, 11.3.21

"Therefore any person who seriously desires real happiness must seek a bona fide spiritual master and take shelter of him by initiation. The qualification of the bona fide guru is that he has realized the conclusions of the scriptures by deliberation and is able to convince others of these conclusions. Such great personality, who has taken shelter of the Supreme Godhead, leaving aside all material considerations, should be understood to be bona fide spiritual master".

"A guru will have to be accepted for the best benefit". Why should we accept a guru? Is the acceptance of a guru customary or materialistic? No, it is not customary. "Jijnasuh sreya uttamam", ("being inquisitive about the highest good" note of proofreader) here two words 'sreya" and "uttamam" have been used. What type of sreya is it? It is the best sreya. General sreya for obtaining materialistic welfare is not worthy of the name. Uttama sreya is to be obtained. And so the lotus feet of a guru are to be taken shelter of. What sort of guru is he? "Sabde pare ca nisnatam" heis well acquainted with sabda brahman and para brahman. Sabda brahman and para brahman is one thing thus identical. The sound of this world is a material one. It is not sabda brahman. It is only sound. The sound of the Supreme World is the transcendental one. It is transcendental. That is sabda brahman.

So, he (guru) is equipped with sabda brahman and para brahman. We can not understand. But he is living very near to God. This feeling should be there. Taking shelter of the lotus feet of a guru is for this. It is for nothing else. What are the sings of such a guru? There are many signs of a guru. I shall discuss it with you. How is he? He is kripa sindhu (an ocean of kindness) and doya sagar (sea of piety). He is full-fledged. A sisya shouldnot have a feeling about anything, one thing in his guru or any incompleteness of his guru. He (guru)is full-fledged and a benefactor of all beings.

He who will go to him will be benefited. This animate object will get welfare by coming in touch with him. Even inanimate objects will be in possession of such a benefit. Here is the paduka (shoe) of my guru. Is it material or animate? But we are offering it pranam. Because it has gone to the touch of the gurudeva and has been turned to be an object of our pranam. Gurudeva is disinterested in anything. He has no attachment, no hope of aspiration.

He is always siddha (perfect), well versed in all matters and expert in everything. He can cease all doubts he has the power to cut down all the doubts of his sisyas. One who cannot make answer to any question of his sisya is not a guru. Guru is not idle he has no idleness. He is called guru. He is described as a guru. So, he is an exact guru. All can not be gurus. It is opined by many that diksha guru and siksha guru are equal. It is not my opinion. It is mentioned according to the scriptures. Yes, they (some people) take the two as equal. What is the inference? As par as Sri Chaitanya Caritamrita:

naivopayanty apacitim kavayas tavesha
brahmayusapi kritam riddha-mudah smarantah
yo ntar bahis tanu-bhritam ashubham vidhunvann
acarya-caittya-vapusha sva-gatim vyanakti

"O my Lord! Transcendental poets and experts in spiritual science could not fully express their indebtedness to You, even if they were endowed with the prolonged lifetime of Brahma, for You appear in two features — externally as the acarya and internally as the Supersoul to deliver the embodied living being by directing him how to come to You").

He is within me as the caita guru. He Himself appears in the world as the Mahanta guru.

shiksha guruke ta; jani krishnera svarupa
antaryami, bhakta shreshtha ei dui rupa
Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Adi-lila, 1.47

"One should know the instructing spiritual master to be the Personality of Krishna. Lord Krishna manifests Himself as the Supersoul and as the greatest devotee of the Lord").

As the antaryami (dweller of the heart) He is caitya guru and as the bhakta shreshtha (best devotee) He is Mahanta guru or diksha guru. These are His two appearances. He who is there as the dweller in the heart is in the show as the best devotee. He is the diksha guru. So, some people say that a siksha guru more worshipable than a diksha guru. It is a wrong inference. Why? The matter should be understood properly. According to the scriptures:

mantra-guru ara yata shiksha-guru-gana
tahara-carana age kariye vandan
Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Adi-lila, 1.35

"I first offer my respectful obeisances at the lotus feet of my initiating spiritual master and all my instructing spiritual masters".

First of all diksha guru is mentioned. Thereafter siksha guru is indicated. Diksha guru is only one. Siksha gurus are many. They (siksha gurus) may be innumerable. Will everyone of them be accepted as a diksha guru? No, on no occasion it can be done.

I was initiated at Bagh Bazaar (Harinama was given to me at Sri Mayapur).Then all began to address me as "Prabhu". My name in my Brahmachari life was Sri Radharaman. So, all called me "Radharaman Prabhu". I was then in my boyhood. I went to my gurudeva, Srila Prabhupada. I said to Him, "Prabhu, previously all addressed me as Radharaman. Why are they calling me as Radharaman Prabhu?" Prabhupada laughed and said "Just see, you are addressed as a prabhu, you consider yourself as "prabhu" This is an example and teaching. Vanity and pride may capture. In order to make that pride weaker the following teaching has been imparted.

gurur sewak moi mano aponar

"The servitor of a guru is to be your respected one".

One of my brother disciples asked me thus, ïOne sisya of Bon Maharaja is seated. Your one sisya has also taken his seat. If a sisya of your brother's sisya comes here, will he offer pranam to you or Bon Maharaja?" I said, "No, he will offer pranam to his guru. But the duty of his guru will be to direct him thus our guru-varga are seated here. Offer your pranam to them". Whenever he (sisya) caries out the order he will have no aparadha.

But he will commit aparadha if he does not offer pranam to his guru at first. The duty of the guru will be to direct his sisya to make obeisances to my guru-varga at first. It is the rule and system. Learn it that diksha is the best.

diksha guru ara yata shiksha-guru-gana

It has a hidden side. Great sisyas of Sri Kesava Maharaja are seated here. One of the said sisyas is younger in age. Will he get the honor offer to the great sisyas? Will there be the fault for making an exception? He will not get the honor like the senior brothers.

Who is accepted as the siksha guru? He who is teaching the service to guru, Vaishnava and God is siksha guru. The person not making the above task will not be accepted as a siksha guru. He has vanity only. In fact, no welfare will be done by him. Other siksha gurus do not deserve honor from their sisyas.

Shastras assert thus diksha guru is the siksha guru. When he initiates he teaches also. In this matter diksha guru and siksha guru are identical. Diksha guru and siksha guru are both seated. Diksha guru is to be offered pranam at first. After that siksha gurus turn will come. Father and uncle are standing. Should one offer his pranam to his uncle at first? It can never be so. First of all father is to be offered pranam. After that uncle can be honored. This is the teaching. This inference is to be obeyed.

From the point of view of this material world, Srila Sanatana Goswami and Srila Rupa Goswami are brothers. Srila Jiva Goswami is their nephew. Vallabha Acharya went to Srila Rupa Goswami in Vrindavana. On reaching there he said, ïSri Rupa, Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu, written by you, is very nice. But there is a thing of misery. I have felt unhappy. You wrote thus:

bhukti-mukti- spriha yavat
pishaci hridi vartate
tavad bhakti-sukhasyatra
katham abhyudayo bhavet
Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu, 1.2.22

"The material desire to enjoy the material world and the desire to become liberated from material bondage are considered to be two witches, and they haunt one like ghosts. As long as these witches remain within the heart, how can one feel transcendental bliss? As long as these two witches remain in the heart, there is no possibility of enjoying the transcendental bliss of devotional service.

You met bhukti and mukti ïpisaci (an evil spirit). There are many persons who are in quest of moksa (salvation of the soul). Will not they take your words as abuse? A great personality like you are abusing". Srila Rupa Goswami said then, "I accept what you say". Vallabha Acharya was satisfied and went to the bank of the Yamuna. Vallabha Acharya was superior to him in respect of age. Just mark who Vaishnava is. Where is our attachment signifying a Vaishnava?

When Vallabha Acharya came to Rupa Goswami, Jiva Goswami was seated there. He followed Vallabha Acharya and went on the bank of the Yamuna.

He offered him pranam. Vallabha Acharya asked:

My dear son, who are you?

Jiva Goswami said: “I am a sisya of demand to whom you had gone.

What is your name?

My name is Sri Jiva.

What do you want to say?

You refuted the inference of my guru. It is not a matter for refutation.

He has written the right thing.

How is it?

He wrote thus:

bhukti-mukti- spriha yavat
pishaci hridi vartate
tavad bhakti-sukhasyatra
katham abhyudayo bhavet
Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu, 1.2.22

"The material desire to enjoy the material world and the desire to become liberated from material bondage are considered to be two witches, and they haunt one like ghosts. As long as these witches remain within the heart, how can one feel transcendental bliss? As long as these two witches remain in the heart, there is no possibility of enjoying the transcendental bliss of devotional service".

He marked this spriha (aspiration) for bhukti and mukti as an evil spirit. How to understand this properly? I can give you one example. We don't have to hate a female. If one says that female sex is a thing to be hated it will not be allowed. But a bad attraction to a female is to be hated. This has been given to understand. How do you say that it is not proper?

Vallabha Acharya wondered. He came back to Rupa Goswami and said:

Sri Rupa, what you have written is correct.

There is no need for excluding it.

Why do you say so, Prabhu?! You just told me thus that "this is wrong. I made the mistake and my fault is now corrected by a handsome boy.

Who is that boy?

His name is Sri Jiva.

You asked to say goodbye to "bhukti mukti spriha".

- The aspirations for enjoyment and liberation are described as a bad thing.

Sri Rupa uttered previously thus "Yes". Now he said thus, "Yes". See how fine is the dealing.

Vallabha Acharya went away. Rupa Goswami then addressed to Jiva Goswami, "I shall not look at you. You are not fit for living in Vrindavana. Your vanity has not been ended. What a bad person you are: You have gone to refer the matter to him". Jiva Goswami is his own sisya and nephew. He (Jiva Goswami) didn't utter a single word like this ïPrabhu, this is unjust
He started his bhajan at Nandagrama by the side of the Yamuna. At first he lived on madhukari (one hand full of food). Afterwards he gave it up. He sat at a place and took Hari Nama only. He did not eat any food. Sanatana Goswami was then traveling dvadash vana (twelve forests). He came to Nandagrama. The residents of the Vraja said, ïPlease come and see. A handsome boy came here. He always utters the Name of Hari. But he does not eat any food. He will perhaps leave his life".

Sanatana Goswami went to the place. When he saw Sri Jiva, he said him,

"What is this, Sri Jiva?! Why are you doing so?! Your life will be finished". Sri Jiva answered, "Prabhu (he never utters the word father), my life is nothing without the kindness of my guru. What is the value of this life of the person who did not receive the krpa of his guru and whom the guru has left? His death is preferable. I think that death is the best for me". "What is the matter?" Sanatana Goswami asked him. Jiva Goswami told him the whole story. Finally he said, "I can not bear any condemnation of my guru. As my gurudeva is displeased with me I prefer this separation. I am now separated. I did not want to worry my gurudeva".

Sanatana Goswami did not tell Sri Jiva anything. He came back to Sri Rupa and said, "Sri Rupa, Sri Jiva is going to leave his life. You, please, show piety and kindness to him". Sri Rupa Goswami said, "Yes, I shall do it". He went running to him (Sri Jiva) and said, "My dear son, come to me". It is called the great devotion to a guru. Srila Prabhupada directly told us all this inferences. We have to obey them. That will bring to us welfare. So, it is said in the scriptures:

acaryam mam vigyaniyan
navamanyeta karhicit
na martya-buddhyasueta
sarva-devamayo guruh
Srimad Bhagavatam, 11.17.27

Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Adi-lila, 1.46

"One should know the acarya to be Myself and never disrespect him in any way. One should not envy him, thinking him an ordinary man, for he is the representative of all the demigods".

What is guru-tattva? "Know it that the Acharya is similar to Me". "Mam vigyaniyan" "know it that he is like Me". "Navamanyeta", – one should never disrespect. Why? Sarva-deva-mayo guruh "representative of all the demigods". It is not in possession of those demigods. By the grace of the Lord he gets the power to show kindness. He learned to be all powerful. Why? He can give the All Powerful Lord. This can not be given by any other person even the demigods fail. They have not such an ability. He should be considered from this point of view. So, diksha guru has been given the importance:

adou guru puja

"First of all a guru has to be worshiped".

Who has to be worshiped first? Does the diksha guru or the siksha guru has to be worshipped first? First of all diksha guru should be worshiped. Siksha guru will not come first. Diksha guru is the one to be worshiped first. Tulsi Dasa said:

guru aur govinda do kore hai kisko laghu paya
yo guru go lake usko boli hari jaya

"Guru and Govinda are standing. Whom shall I offer my pranam? I shall praise him who will offer obeisances to his guru at first".

Guru and Govinda are standing in front of me. Whom shall I offer my pranam at first? Guru is to be offered pranam first of all. Then Govinda is to be offered obeisances. If the inference is that will the siksha guru be offered pranam first? This judgment can not be a proper one. The characteristics of siksha guru can not be more then that of diksha guru. The only characteristic remaining is that diksha guru is the siksha guru. This judgment should be learned. Guru-tattva is such a thing, so it is said:

sad-guru pabe veda batave gyana kore upadesha
tou kailaki maila chote jou aga kore parevesha

"If you get a sad guru, he will show you the right path and will give you proper knowledge. It is just like a fire destroying all dirtiness".

Who is spoken of as the sad guru? He who shows the Veda or the way. "Jnana kore upadesh?" he gives tattva jnana:

agyana-timirandhasya
gyananjana-shalakaya
cakshur unmilitam yena
tasmai shri-gurave namah
Gautama-tantra

"I offer my respectful obeisances unto my spiritual master, who with the torchlight of knowledge has opened my eyes, which were blinded by the darkness of ignorance").

”Kailaki maila chote”, coal is dirty, but at the time of its being burned by fire the dirtiness of coal is abolishes. In the same way, when the fire in the form of an advice of a gurudeva will enter in the ears of a sisya, the dirty things, darkness and the bad tendencies remaining in the sisya will be burned to ashes. There after the Lord will be observed. There are two words in English transparent and opaque. No picture will be reflected so long there is invisibility. Whenever the transparent medium is established pictures will be reflected.

I went to Dakka, Narayanaconch, Moimansing, Dinachpur, Koelna, Jessore and other places in Bangladesh for preaching. A Muslim asked me, “Sir, you are saying Bhagavan and Hari several times. We are uttering Allah But He is not visible. Where is He? How can I identify Him? Have you ever seen Him?

What should I answer? I answered thus, Yes, I saw Him. A play is staged in London. Here is a TV Box in front of you. How do you see the picture? How could the pictures reach here? It is with the help of ether. An arrangement has been made there. As a result you see the pictures here. You also make your mind like TV. Then you will see that the Lord comes to you from Goloka. You will be able to see Him. At that time you can realize. You can not realize without this arrangement. For example, someone loves a young lady. She is not here. She lives in Bombay. Though she is in Bombay she lives in his heart. If the Lord can be loved in that way He will take His seat in your heart in spite of His staying in Goloka. He Himself said:

sadhavo hrdayam mahyam
sadhunam hrdayam tv aham
mad-anyat te na jananti
naham tebhyo manag api
Srimad Bhagavatam, 9.4.68)

ïThe pure devotee is always within the core of My heart, and I am always in the heart of the pure devotee. My devotees do not know anything else but Me, and I do not know anyone else but them".

"What is this? You say that You are in the hearts of the devotees. But You also say that You are aware of every jiva". "Yes, I take my seat in every heart and am aware of it. While a person suffers from miseries I also suffer. Living in the heart of a devotee I do not suffer from miseries. I get pleasure by doing so. I feel happy by observing his serving attitude". The shastra says:

yasya deve para bhaktir
yatha deve tatha gurau
tasyaite kathita hy arthah
prakashante mahatmanah
Shvetashvatara Upanishad, 6.23)

"Unto those great souls who have implicit faith in both the Lord and the spiritual master, all the imports of Vedic knowledge are automatically revealed".

Guru will have to be seen in the same form as we see in the Lord. He is no way inferior.

brahmanda bhramite kono bhagyavan jiva
guru-krishna-prasade paya bhakti lata bija
Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Madhya-lila, 19.151)

"According to their karma, all living entities are wandering throughout the entire universe. Some of them are being elevated to the upper planetary systems, and some are going down into the lower planetary systems. Out of many millions of wandering living entities, one who is very fortunate gets an opportunity to associate with a bona fide spiritual master by the grace of Krishna. By the mercy of both Krishna and the spiritual master, such a person receives the seed of the creeper of devotional service".

"By the grace of Guru and Krishna a fortunate person gets the seed of devotion when he goes around the universe. If he worships Krishna and serves his Guru, his curtain of maya will disappear and he will get the lotus feet of Krishna").

tate krishna bhaje kore guru sevana
maya chote pai shri krishna carana

"If he worships Krishna and serves His guru, his curtain of maya will disappear and he will get the lotus feet of Krishna").

Go on taking bhajan of Krishna. If anybody goes on doing bhajan the offering of maya will be vanished. He will then get the lotus feet of Krishna. Otherwise there is no way to get it. The aim will not be reached at without the mercy of a guru. Whom can we accept as guru? The shastra says:

vaco vegam manasah krodha-vegam
jihva-vegam udaropastha-vegam
etan vegan yo vishaheta dhirah
sarvam apimam prithivim sa shisyat
Upadeshamrita, 1

"A sober person who can tolerate the urge to speak, the mind's demands, the actions of anger and the urges of the tongue, belly and genitals is qualified to make disciples all over the world").

ey chay vegajar sada vase ray
shad gosvami, tare prithive pujay

"He who gives this six in control is a Goswami. He is worshipped by the world".

There are two meanings of the word "Goswami". "Go" means "cow". The husband of a cow is an ox. He is lustful. Again, "go" means "senses". He who is the husband of the senses or has controlled them is a Goswami. He is not a servant of the senses. He conquered the world. Our well-being will appear when we come in touch with him.

achinoti ya sastrartam acare staparat api
sayam achar jate jasmat acharya stena kitita
apani achari dharma jivere shikhaya
apani na koile dharma shikhama najaya

"He who acts himself and teaches others knows that without doing so religion can not be taught".

He who acts himself in his life with proper dealings and teaches others the lesson is an acharya or guru. In the scriptures guru have been given more importance than the Lord. Our gurudeva said, "If the Lord Himself comes and says, "I am the Supreme Godhead", I shall say to Him, "You may go away". When my gurudeva will come and say, "See, He is the Lord". I shall then bow down my head". There is a saying:

kabe anguli nidesha kori more adakaibe

When will you show by indicating your finger?

Why is it sung:

sri rupa manjari pada, sei more sampada

”The feet of Sri Rupa Manjari are my wealth” ?

Is it not concerned with guru-tattva? The matter should be understood in good state.

Now a day there is a difference of opinion concerning diksha guru and siksha guru. Many persons observe that diksha guru and siksha guru are to be honored on the same platform. I admit that a siksha guru is to be honored but it should not be done in the presence of a diksha guru. Caita guru has made himself double figured. How has he done so? Siksha guru and mahanta guru. A mahanta guru is also a siksha guru. Is he a guru free from all responsibilities after initiating his sisya? He teaches his sisya thus: "My dear son, follow this path. You should process your life in this way". So, caitya guru, Sri Vyasadeva is the diksha guru and diksha guru is a siksha guru if he is present.

Will not other siksha gurus impart lessons? They will teach how to serve the Lord after obeying the diksha gurus. If a siksha guru fails to teach how to obey a diksha guru he is not a siksha guru. He can never be a siksha guru. What will he teach? What welfare will come to the world through him? Nothing will be actualized. He will show the procedure, "My dear son, follow this way". He will show the way, "Go to him (diksha guru)". If he (guru) is merciful then he (sisya) will see the Lord afterwards. Otherwise he will fail to get Him. So, shastras enjoined:

guru krishna-rupa hana shastrera pramane
guru-rupe krishna kripa karena bhakta gane
Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Adi-lila, 1.45

"According to the deliberate opinion of all revealed scriptures, the spiritual master is non-different from Krishna. Lord Krishna in the form of the spiritual master delivers His devotees".

A Guru turns to be Krishna on the support of the scriptures. Krishna shows His mercy as a Guru".

Why are the lines written? There is a judgment in them. One group of people sees a guru as an embodiment of the bhagavad kripa (mercy of the Lord). Another says that a guru is God Himself. They are of the opinion there is no need of a Deity of the Lord. They say: "We make our guru taking the position". We do not admit it. The inference is to be understood. A king and the representative of the king are two persons. The representative of the king is not a king. The assent of the king has come. He will get his due honor. As the king has not come, his representative, the vice-raja, gets the honor due to the king. But the vice-raja is not the king. In the same way, the representative of the Lord is gurudeva. God Himself says:

tasmai deham tato grayam satya puca yata aham

"He is to be taken and worshiped like Me".

This means: "Guru is to be worshipped like Me. Because you will not get Me without His mercy". So, this Lord, gurudeva, is the sevak bhagavan (servitor of God). On the other hand the Lord is the seva bhagavan (the Lord who is been served). If the guru has turned to be the Lord the following verse could not been written:

akhanda mandala karan bhavtan yeno cara-caran

tat padam dar****am yena tasmai shri guruve namah

"The Lord is unbroken and rounded. He is spread everywhere. The guru who shows Him is to be offered pranam".

He who shows the lotus feet of Him is Sri Gurudeva. Will the guru makes his feet forwards and says, "I am the Lord. Bend your head here?" He will never do so. We look at a guru from this point of view. He is the sevak of Bhagavan. He will make me reach the lotus feet of the Lord. He who has not the capacity to make us reach the lotus feet of the Lord is not to be accepted by us as guru.

There is an example. Once Vamanadeva had gone to Baliraja. He was going to ask alms. The offering would be made by Baliraja. Vamanadeva had been walking in front of all. Brahmins were very greedy. They said, "A child is walking ahead. He will beg for this or that. Then we shall not get anything". So, they took hold of Him and made Him walk behind. When the brahmins reached Baliraja they found out that the short figured man was already standing near him. They said, "Alas! We placed Him behind. But now He is in front of us. What is the matter?" Baliraja said to Vamanadeva, "What do you want?" Vamanadeva replied, "I do not require anything. I want only the pieces of land for the three steps of my feet". The Brahmins felt relieved, "You beg for more things. On the contrary you are eager to get three pieces of land for your footsteps. How long are the pieces of land for your three footsteps? What a fool he is!" Baliraja says, "You do not think of your interest. You ask something more. I shall give it up". "No, I am not in need of anything more. The pieces of land for my three footsteps will suffice", answered Vamanadeva.

At that time guru Sukra Acharya came there. He was not a guru of less importance. He had the proper ability. He said, "What are you doing, Bali?" Bali replied, "I am making offerings. Do you know this man?" "No, I do not know him. But I think that He is the Lord Himself. He will take off everything you belong. Nothing will be left", replied Sucra Acharya. It implies the following words of a modern guru If he takes up all of you what shall I eat? How will he maintain him? Bali Maharaja said, "What did you say? Is He the Lord?
The answer was "Yes". "Then it is very good. I shall be benefited from both sides. If He is the Lord Himself, He will take off everything. If he is not so, he will accept three pieces of land for his footsteps. I shall not be deprived from any corner", thought Bali Maharaja.

There was a rule then. At the time of donating anything the word "Om" was to be pronounced by taking water from the water pot used for religious purposes. Baliraja was trying to take water from such a pot. No water comes out. Then Vamanadeva said, "Clear the pipe by a pin". After the use of a pin Sukra Acharya comes out from the pipe as a blind person.

Why is he described here as a blind one? As far as the verse "sruti smriti upa netre", Sri Vamanadeva has two eyes: Sruti and Smriti (hearing capacity and memory). Sruti is a mother. The mother of a son makes his father know to him that is your father. He (son) has not seen his father. What will he (son) guess about his father? His mother tells him everything. In the same way Sruti is the mother, Veda. Smriti discloses how to serve a father. Sukra Acharya said that Vamanadeva is the Lord. But he restrained the king from rendering service to Him. So, he is described as a "blind" man. Baliraja does not obey the acharya. He said, "I shall disobey you. I shall make a offering". By saying so he abandoned his guru.

Vamanadeva took over the position of the Heaven, the Earth and the Nether worlds by His two feet. Is there a guru who after refuting to set up a Deity of the Lord and declaring himself as the almighty can place his leg from this spot to the temple of Puri? If he can do so, I shall be a sisya of him after giving up everything. Not only this happened. Vamanadeva told Bali to offer Him the place were he could set up his another foot. It was not known where His third feet was then. He showed His third foot at that time.

Where is that guru who has described himself as the Lord and is in the capacity of reducing his third leg publicly? Is he capable of doing so?

Our inference is that a guru is the Lord. But he is the sevak of Bhagavan. He is there to give the seva to Bhagavan. No other person than a guru can give the Lord. None has this capacity. This is the judgment and the inference. We have to accept this. So:

guru rupe krishna kripa koren bhakta gane

"Krishna shows His mercy on devotees as a guru").

Now some persons may speak of a siksa guru and his importance.

A siksha guru has been divided in two parts. As the dweller in the hearts He is caitya guru. As the best devotee he is mahanta guru or diksha guru. The teachings of other siksha gurus to the effect that they are better than diksha gurus is not acceptable.

What type of guru is Sukra Acharya? He is not a proper guru just like Parasurama. Bhismadeva abandoned his guru Parasurama. Why did he do so? He is a sakta-avatar of the Lord. Bhismadeva is His sisya. Bhisma brought Amba, Ambika and Ambalika after he had conquered a country.

Ambika and Ambalika where married to his brother Vichitravirya. Amba loved Salwa, who was the king. By permission of Bhishma she leaved the Kuru's kingdom and went to king Salwa's palace. Amba was praying Salwa to marry her but he did not do so. Then Amba decided to inhabit the forest and practice austerities and penances for the rest of her life.

In her wanderings, she came upon the ashrama of some great rishis, and she informed them of her plight. It so happened that among those great sages was her maternal grandfather Hotravahana. The royal sage felt despondent for what had befallen her and told her that on the following day, Parashurama, the martial teacher of Bhishma, would come to the ashrama. He was sure Parashurama would influence Bhishma to accept her hand in marriage.

The next day Parashurama arrived at the ashrama and Amba related to him the events of her abduction by Bhishma and her rejection by king Salwa. She requested the great sage to kill Bhishma. Parashurama felt sorry for the girl and gave her hope by saying, "O daughter of Kashi, I will not take up weapons except to protect those that follow the Vedas. Tell me, therefore, what can I do for you? Both Bhishma and Salwa are obedient to me. Do not lament. I will fulfill your desire". But when He came to Hastinapura to speak with Bhisma, Bhishma said, "I promised to remain unmarried". If the guru directs "gururaka abhicaranya" the order of him must be obeyed without making any judgment. He directed Bhisma to marry her. But Bhisma said, "What is this gurudeva?! I have promised to remain unmarried during my life. I shall not marry in my life. Being my guru you know it. But what are you saying for my marriage?" Parasurama said, "I am your guru. I direct you to marry".

karyakaryam agyanatash
utpatha-pratipannasya

"The order of a guru is to be obeyed on its marriages").

If the guru goes astray, he is to be forsaken as far the rules. The rule is to abandon a guru following a contrary path. Bhisma left his guru. Then his guru said, "Yutam dehi" ("start a fight"). Bhisma fought against his guru for twenty four days. This outward suitability of a guru is not his duty.

Who is a guru? He who can show the lotus feet of the Lord is a real guru. I gained some power and I shall be a guru by virtue of this. It will not be possible. Yogis attain divine grace through the austere religious practices. They achieve such mystical perfections as anima-siddhi (power of becoming small like a particle), laghima-siddhi (power of becoming lighter than a soft feather), isitva-siddhi (power to act freely even to create something wonderful or to annihilate anything at will), vasitva-siddhi (power to control all material elements) etc. but the Lord can not be available through this austere practices.

"Since one cannot visually experience the presence of the Supersoul, He appears before us as a liberated devotee. Such a spiritual master is none other than Krishna Himself".

"Guru is there in the form of caita guru. He can not be visible. Krishna becomes a siksha guru in the shape of a mahanta guru".

Jivas do not have any perceptible presence of the caita guru. "Caitya guru hon krishna mahanta swarupe". So, He becomes a guru by taking the form of a mahanta. A mahanta guru is diksha guru. A siksha guru has never been described anywhere as a mahanta guru. It is clearly spoken here. Anyone desires of defending it may do so.

Will one be a diksha guru by teaching Bhagavat (God)? A siksha guru will teach to render services with a faith of adherence to a diksha guru. If siksha guru excludes a diksha guru and becomes "brahman" by uttering"aham brahmasmi" ("I am brahman") it will be a total massacre.

A diksha guru is a mahanta guru. He has come to deliver jivas. Guru are of two types: nitya-siddha and sadhana-siddha. The Lord sends a guru after making him nitya-siddha. Sometimes He sends sadhana-siddha guru. If a diksha guru is sent by the Lord, he will make sisyas for deliverance. So, he is described as mahanta guru. He obeys the order of the Lord. The matter should be understood in good state

When Buddhism pervaded the world and the religion of kindness was preached by the Buddhist, the Lord Himself called Siva and said to Him:

svagamaih kalpitais tvam ca janan mad-vimukhan-kuru
mam ca gopaya yena syat shrishtir eshottarottara

Shiva-purana

"Addressing Lord Shiva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead said:]

"Please, make the general populace averse to Me by imagining your own interpretation of the Vedas. Also, cover Me in such a way that people will take more interest in advancing material civilization just to propagate a population bereft of spiritual knowledge".

Lord said that, "Exclude Me and make jivas conscious only of impersonal brahman". "Mam ca gopaya", leave the secret about Me untold.

"Shrishtir eshottarottara", the outer creation will have to be gradually progressed. Siva said with folded hands, "My Lord, I shall not be able to do this. I shall not be able to leave the secret about You untold". Then the Lord said, "This can not be done by anyone else except You. Now it is needed. Mayavada Nirveshvada has to be giving effect to. You will have to speak of hidden Buddhism".

In order to obey the Lord Siva came here as Shankara Acharya. But in the long run he could not totally conceal Him from people in his performances. In his birthplace Kerala, the Acharya set up the Deity of Ekal Krishna. He said afterwards, ïBhaja govindam, bhaja govindam, govindam bhaja mura mate (Fools, you go on worshiping Govinda). The followers of Shankara of Kantipuram do not admit it.

There is another example. When Siva was in Kasi, one day Shankara Acharya was passing by the side of the Muni Kanika Ghat. Durga Devi was lying on the way and She had Siva lying on Her lap. Shankara Acharya came there and said, "What are you doing? You are lying with the dead body. Leave the place. How shall I go if you would not do that?" The lady answered, "What is your inference? You said, "Jiva is brahman". "Sarva brahma idam jagat ("this world is full of brahman"). If that is the case how do you see a dead body? How does your inference stand?" Shankara was wondered. He thought, "A lady is telling me this". Uttering the words the lady disappeared with her husband. Siva and Durga appeared for bringing to light the philosophical knowledge. So, Nirvishes theory Advaitavad will not be enforced. There is no irrefutable argument in it. So, Advaitavad is not proved.

How can the theories of siksa guru and diksha guru be known?

krishna yadi kripa kare kono bhagyavane
guru-antaryami-rupe shikhaya apane
Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Madhya-lila, 22.47)

"Krishna is situated in everyone's heart as the caitya guru, the spiritual master within. When He is kind (extends His kripa mercy) to some fortunate conditioned soul, He personally gives him lessons so he can progress in devotional service, instructing the person as the Supersoul (antaryami) within and the spiritual master without").

Will it be known by a debate? No, ïkrishna yadi kripa kare kono bhagyavane when Krishna is kind to some fortunate soul. All will not be fortunate. Guru-antaryami-rupe shikhaya apane. He will teach as the antaryami. Krishna has kindly sent a guru. If He did not do so, how could you get His kripa? A guru is thus sent to you. Then if you prepare your store, His kripa will appear there automatically. Srila Jiva Goswami wrote:

bhagavat kripa bhakta kripa gamini
bhakta kripa bhagavad kripa gamini

"The kripa of the Lord will be available by the grace of a guru and kripa of the guru will come down from the Lord".

It is inseparably related. If the Lord shows His mercy I shall get the kripa of a guru. When a guru is merciful, the kripa of the Lord will be available. If some siksha guru is speaking proudly, "I am equally honorable like a diksha guru", it is described as improper. Why is siksha desirous of getting the honor of a diksha guru? One of your brother-sisya is the best, you must offer your pranam to him. But it should not been done in the presence of your gurudeva. It is the matter. A brother-sisya of a guru is standing. Shall I offer my pranam to the brother-sisya or to him? The inference is that I shall bow down to my guru. If he direct to offer pranam to the Maharaja, you may do so. It will not be improper. We get from a Mahajana Padavali:

shri-guru-carana-padma, kevala bhakati-sadma,
bando mui savadhana mate
jahara prasade bhai, e bhava toriya jai,
krishna-prapti hoy jaha hate
guru-mukha-padma-vakya, cittete koriya aikya,
ar na koriho mane asha
shri-guru-carane rati, ei se uttama gati,
je prasade pure sarva asha
cakhu-dan dilo jei, janme janme prabhu sei,
divya gyan hride prokasito
prema-bhakti jaha hoite, avidya vinasha jate,
vede gay jahara carito
shri-guru karuna-sindhu, adhama janara bandhu,
lokanath lokera jivana
ha ha prabhu koro doya, deho more pada-chaya,
ebe jasha ghushuk tribhuvana

Sri Guru-vandana from Prema-bhakti-candrika

1) The lotus feet of our spiritual master are the only way by which we can attain pure devotional service. I bow to his lotus feet with great awe and reverence. By his grace one can cross the ocean of material suffering and obtain the mercy of Krishna .

2) My only wish is to have my consciousness purified by the words emanating from his lotus mouth. Attachment to his lotus feet is the perfection that fulfills all desires.

3) He opens my darkened eyes and fills my heart with transcendental knowledge. He is my Lord birth after birth. From him ecstatic prema emanates; by him ignorance is destroyed. The Vedic scriptures sing of his character.

4) Our spiritual master is the ocean of mercy, the friend of the poor, and the lord and master of the devotees. O master! Be merciful unto me. Give me the shade of your lotus feet. Your fame is spread all over the three worlds.

The lotus feet of Sri Guru is the dwelling house of devotion. I worship them with reverence. By his grace one can cross the ocean of material suffering and obtain the mercy of Krishna . The words coming out of the lotus mouth of the guru are to be preserved in the mind. Nothing else is to be aspired after. Attachment to the lotus feet of Sri Guru feet is the best goti (way) that fulfills all desires. He who has donated me the eyes is my Prabhu (for times and immemorial) in my different births. Divya jnana is revealed in my mind. Prema bhakti (loving devotion) is derived from it. Avidhya(ignorance) is destroyed by it. His merits are described in the Vedas.

What is told here about guru-tattva?
sei se parama bandhu, se pita mata
shri krishna carane ye prema bhakti data

"He who gives me the ability to express my loving devotion to the lotus feet of Sri Krishna is my best friend and parents"). So, the real father in this world is Sri Gurudeva:

tvameva matta ca pitta tvameva
tvameva bandhusya sakha tvameva
tvameva vidya dravinang tvameva
tvameva sarvang mama deva deva

"You are my mother, father, friend and companion. You are knowledge, means, everything and all demigods and demigoddesses".

During the British regime I went to Rangun, Burma, for preaching. Then Sripad Yajak Maharaja and I were companions. One day I read:

jivera 'svarupa' haya krishnera 'nitya-dasa'
krishnera 'tatastha-shakti' 'bhedabheda-prakasha'

ïIt is the living entity's constitutional position (svarupa) to be an eternal servant (nitya dasa) of Krishna because he is the marginal energy (tatastha sakti) of Krishna and a manifestation simultaneously one with and different from the Lord (bhedabheda-prakasha)").

I told Yajak Maharaja, "Maharaja, I do not admit it". "What is this?! Srila Krishna Dasa Kaviraja has written it and you do not admit", he said. I wrote an essay and send it to Delhi, "Nadiya Prakas". Then Srila Bhakti Pramode Puri Maharaja and Bhakti Kusum Sraman Maharaja (Sri Krishna Kanti Brahmachari) were its writer and publisher respectively. Then I wrote the essay "Write paritjaya" ("Signs of a servant"). I wrote there, "Krishnera dasata haya mora paricaya (My signs lie in the services of the Lord)".

It is rightly written. But now I do not admit it. Why? I have no acquaintance with Krishna. I did not see Him. I do not know Him, I do not understand Him and I do not get Him. I wrote at last, "My signs are available from the services of my guru". If I have any identity than "I am a servant of my guru". Prabhupada read the essay and said with tears in his eyes, "What a great thing has been wrote down by such a little boy!" He said to Krishna Kanti Prabhu, "Please, write it to him (the boy) that his gurudeva has blessed him after going to it". It is exactly the truth. Where have we seen Krishna? We have seen Him as a stone. He who will take away my material understanding after cutting down the cataract of my eyes is Sri Gurudeva. I shall see the Lord by His Grace. Therefore, whom shall I keep importance? How shall I bless importance to others? I shall do that with a view to getting the mercy of my guru. In this life devoid of guru-kripa I am not agreed to admit any other person whoever he may be.

Garuda went to Sri Ramachandra. What did He say? "Vamshi dhariye chariye danurvan" (gets hold of Your flute and leave Your bow and arrows)". Garuda was not bowing down to Ramachandra. He said, "You, please, give up Your bow and arrows and gets hold of Your flute then I shall offer You my pranam". Hanuman went to Krishna. He said to Him,

Cariye vamsi dhare doriye dhanur vana ("Leave the sounds of Your flute and take Your bow and arrows"). Where is the deep attachment?

shri nathe janaki nathe ca vede paramatmani
tathapi mama sarvasva rama kamala locana

"Sri Natha and Janiki Natha are identical and Supreme. Yet my all in all is the Lotus Eyed Rama".

My total position is Sri Rama Kamala Locana. I have no one else. So, a sisya have deep attachment for his guru. By such a deep attachment for a guru the lotus feet of the Lord can be obtained.Without firm faith in a guru nobody can attain His lotus feet. As a sisya of Srila Saraswati Prabhupada I am bringing it to light if any other person takes a sisya and this sisya does not show proper honor to him, the proceedings of his religious life can not be maintained. This is the conclusion.

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupada Sri Srimad Gaura Govinda Swami Maharaja made his appearance on September 2nd 1929, in the village of Jagannatha-pura, not far from Jagannatha-puri Dhama, Orissa, India. Sri Braja-bandhu, as His Divine Grace was then known, grew up in the village of Gadai-giri, where he practiced devotional service to Krishna from his early childhood. His grandfather was a paramahamsa, whose only business was to chant Hare Krishna and cry before the Deity of Krishna, known locally as Gopal Jiu. He taught Braja-bandhu how to count by chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra on his fingers. In his childhood Braja-bandhu would travel with his uncles from village to village chanting Hare Krishna and singing the songs of Narottama das Thakura. The Giri family, in which Srila Gaura Govinda Swami appeared, have been known among the most famous kirtana performers in Orissa since the time of Syamananda Prabhu. Three hundred years ago in the temple register of Jagannatha Puri, the King of Orissa wrote that the kirtana party of Gadai-giri should come perform kirtana for Lord Jagannatha whenever possible. In Orissa they are seen as kirtana-gurus.
From the age of six, Braja-bandhu worshiped the Deity of Gopal by making galands and sometimes, under the light of a candle, singing hymes for Him from palm leaf manuscripts. He would never take any food that was not offered to Gopal.
By the age of eight, Braja-bandhu had read the entire bhagavad-gita, Srimad-bhagavatam and Sri Caitanya-caritamrta and could also explain their meanings. At night many villagers would come to hear his recitation of the Oriya Bhagavata, Ramayana and Mahabharata. In this way, from the very beginning of his life he was absorbed in chanting Hare Krishna, studying Vaishnava literature and worshiping his beloved Gopal. His natural inclination to the Lord indicated his future devotional life, just as the morning shows the day.
After the death of his father in 1955, he became responsible for maintaining the family. And when he entered the grihasta ashrama, on the request of his widowed mother the burden increased. He met his wife, Srimati Vasanti Devi, for the first time during the marriage ceremony. Owing to financial constraints he could not avail himself of university education. But he prepared himself at night to attend the examinations. Within two months he successfully graduated, acquiring the second position among all the students of Utkal University. In this way he completed his B.A. and later his B.Ed. Despite many responsibilities, his devotion for Gopal never slacked. Always keeping Krishna in the center, he would daily speak to his family from the bhagavad-gita and early in the morning worship Tulasi. Also during this time as a householder, when he adopted the profession of a school teacher, he would take every opportunity to speak to his students, about Krishna and the devotional principles. Thirty years later, some of his students were to become his disciples.
On April 8th, 1974, his deep love for Krishna called him to renounce worldly life. At the age of 45 he left home and relatives in quest of spiritual perfection. Carrying only a bhagavad-gita and a begging bowl he wandered around India for one year and visited many sacred places along the river Ganges. He was searching for that person who could help him develop an understanding of the maha-mantra. After many philosophical debates with mayavadi sannyasis and yogis in the Himalayas, he proceeded on foot to Vrindavana, the sacred lila-bhumi of Sri Sri Radha and Krishna, thinking that in Krishna’s dear abode his desire would be fulfilled
Two weeks after arriving in Vrindavana he saw a signboard with the words International Society for Krishna Consciousness, Founder-acharya A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada. Then he met a group of Western devotees who gave him a copy of back to Godhead magazine. When he read the contents describing the glory of divine love for Krishna, his heart became anxious to meet the founder of the movement, Srila Prabhupada. At last he was to meet his eternal spiritual master, whose association he had been awaiting for such a long time.
Srila Prabhupada had just finished his lunch when Gaura Govinda Swami entered the room and paid his obeisances. Srila Prabhupada then asked him, “Have you taken sannyasa?”
Gaura Govinda Swami said, “no,” and Srila Prabhupada said, “Then I will give you sannyasa.” At that time Gaura Govinda Swami understood that Prabhupada knew his heart and surrendered to him.
In 1975, at the opening of ISKCON’s Krishna-Balaram Temple in Vrindavana, Srila Prabhupada accepted him as a disciple, gave him the name Gaura Govinda and awarded him the sannyasa order. Then Srila Prabhupada sent him to preach in Orissa, and construct a temple on the newly donated property in Bhubaneswar.
At that time, the donated land was a wild jungle full of mosquitoes, snake and scorpions. It was so far from the city center that even during the daytime people were scared to visit out of fear of dacoits. But Srila Gaura Govinda Swami, considering the desire of Srila Prabhupada his life and soul, was undaunted and worked with unwavering determination to fulfill it. Sometimes residing in the storeroom of a tea dealer and even sometimes sharing a small hut with the road construction workers, he began translating Srila Prabhupada’s books into Oriya as he had been instructed.
Spreading Krishna consciousness, Srila Gaura Govinda Swami would visit house after house, office after office, in and around Bhubaneswar, sometimes walking sometimes riding on the carriage rack of a bicycle peddled by a local student, who later became his dear disciple, Sacinandana dasa. In this way he collected some small donations and with his own hands constructed a thatched hut on the donated property.
In early 1977 Srila Prabhupada came to Bhubaneswar. Although arrangements had been made for Srila Prabhupada to stay comfortably in the government state guest house, Srila Prabhupada at once rejected this proposal. He said, “I will only stay where my disciple child Gaura Govinda has built a mud hut for me.”Srila Prabhupada stayed in Bhubaneswar for seventeen days, during which he laid the foundation stone of the temple-to-be on the auspicious occasion of Lord Nityananda’s appearance day. This was Srila Prabhupada’s last founded project.
In 1991, after sixteen years of determined endeavors, Srila Gaura Govinda Swami fulfilled the instruction of his spiritual master with the opening of a magnificent temple of Sri Sri Krishna-Balarama which now attracts thousands of people! to Krishna consciousness. Srila Gaura Govinda Swami said “I have opened a ‘crying school’ here in Bhubaneswar. Unless we cry for Krishna, we cannot get his mercy.” This was the message he preached so vigorously all over the world during the last ten years of his manifest pastimes.
Although Srila Gaura Govinda Swami was always meek and humble in his personal dealings, in his classes on Srimad-bhagavatam he would roar like a lion, smashing the pride and cutting the misconceptions from the hearts of his disciples. Sometimes he would read an apparently basic philosophical statement from Prabhupada’s purports. Then he would laugh like a child and say, “Here the topic of krishna-prema comes up, but it requires further explanation.” Then he would astound the devotees by giving more and more profound explanations of the same sentence for two or three hours. On one such occasion he said, “Look, Krishna is laughing at me because I am trying to completely describe this topic, which is unlimited.”
Srila Gaura Govinda Swami’s knowledge of scripture was formidable. He would substantiate everything he said with evidence from all over the Vedic literature. Sometimes he would question a disciple and if the disciple could not answer with reference to the scriptures, Srila Gaura Govinda Swami would at once exclaim, “He is a cheater. Don’t be a crooked person. A Vaishnava quotes authority.”
On February 9th, 1996, the holy appearance day of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, two senior devotees requested an appointment to see Srila Gaura Govinda Swami. They had never spoken with him before, but they had become eager to hear from him after reading some of his books. As if by providential arrangement, they entered his room at 6.00 p.m. and submissively inquired, "Why did Caitanya Mahaprabhu stay in Jagannatha Puri?" He laughed with delight and began to explain the confidential significance of Mahaprabhu's pastimes. In anser to this question he lovingly described the pain of separation felt by Radha and Krishna when Krishna was away from Vrindavana. He had often narrated this moving pastime as recorded in Chapter Eight of this great work, "The Embankment of Separation". Enchanting all the devotees in his room with the nectarean topics of Krishna, he gradually unfolded the pastime to the point where Radha and Krishna were finally united after Their long separation. He described how Krishna became so ecstatic upon seeing Radharani that He manifested a form with big round eyes, known as Lord Jagannatha. With a choked voice he said, "Then the eyes of Krishna fell upon the eyes of Radharani. Eye-to-Eye union." Overwhelmed with love for Radha and Krishna, he apologized with folded hands, "Please excuse me, I cannot speak". In a barely audible voice he gave his final instruction: "Nama Koro! Nama Koro! (Chant the holy name)" All the devotees began to chant as their spiritual master lay back on his bed, breathing very slowly and deeply. A servant nearby placed a picture of Gopal Jiu [his childhood deity] in his hand. Then, gazing lovingly at the picture of his worshipable deity, Srila Gaura Govinda Swami called out, "Gopal!" and departed for the spiritual sky to be united with his beloved Lord.
Every day before Srimad-Bhagavatam class, Srila Gaura Govinda Swami would sing a song he had learned as a boy. Now his prayer was fulfilled.

"O supremely blissful Madhava! The nectar is coming from Your lotus feet. Drinking that nectar, I blissfully sing 'Hari! Hari!' With the name of Hari I am binding a raft on which Lord Jagannatha will ferry me across this ocean of material existence. My mind always remains at the lotus feet of that Lord Jagannatha who has very large round eyes. In this way, I call out "Ha Krishna!" and give up my life. O husband of Radharani, please deliver me."

The sadhu never speaks theoretically.

The country's new legislation does not consider ISKCON as a centennial religion, a internationally recognized religion or a new religion.

Satam prasangam – One should hear from sadhus, but who are actually sadhus? A sadhu is one in whose heart Lord Sri Krsna has manifested. That sadhu is always remembering the sweet pastimes of Krsna. He is totally surrendered to Sri Krsna, and especially to his Guru. He has heard the sweet pastimes of Krsna from his own diksa-guru or siksa-guru, the followers of Krsna. In the association of a sadhu, all varieties of hari-katha flow like rivers and lakes such as Mana-sarovara. Such waters carry the very sweet pastimes of Sri Krsna, which come to us like so many currents here and there. - Srila Gurudeva
